On paper, Melbourne vs Port Adelaide this weekend looks like a no-brainer.
The Demons are coming off a thrilling, high-standard win over Fremantle last Saturday, a side still very much the premiership favourite. It was the highest score against them for the season. That result not only kept Melbourneโs top-six push alive, it put the double chance firmly into play.
Hours later in Sydney, Port Adelaide hit a new low. Already ravaged by injuries, the Power were blown out of the water by the Swans in their worst defeat of 2026, and left the SCG with even more casualties and a suspension to boot. They have now lost five in a row.
Add in Melbourneโs new comfort away from home since the bye, and even at Adelaide Oval, it should be all systems go for the Demons as they charge toward September.
Not so fast.
