The Year My Hair Fell Out

The Year My Hair Fell Out My first stab at fiction that's loosely based on that first year one has living and working abroad. The setting is South Korea and the year is 2003.

The Year My Hair Fell Out is a somewhat loose account of one’s defining first year living and working abroad in a foreign culture. We witness the story via the eyes of one Don Laridis, a mid-thirties Australian who has left Sydney to teach English in South Korea, a country he knows next to nothing about. Unbeknownst to Don, the English academy that he has been recruited for has gone belly up. Inst

ead of running he opts to stay, revelling and losing himself in the uncertain situation. He teaches English to farm kids, university students, corporate types and housewives – people immersed in a sometimes obsessive pursuit of a second language, even to the brink of murder. This is an interesting, humorous and at times gripping story of one’s exposure to an idiosyncratic of a foreign culture. It is seen not just in the curious dynamics of private education, but also in the diverse characters Don meets on the hoof. Bob Blunt peeks into the moral fabric of unfamiliar culture that’s dealing with Confucian traditions and new found modernity. Bob narratives, prods, pricks, and observes while keeping us tight in step with the central character.

One down with just two performances left tonight (7pm) and tomorrow Sunday at 5pm. Hope you can make one of them. Last night was opening night and opened with a bang literally as the skies stormed down on Darlo Drama.

This play has everything - it’s dark, twisted with sardonic humour, light and shade; all done with NY street accents that are physical and befitting of the streets that the play is set on. It’s been challenging putting this one on but well worth the ride. Our director Sean O’Riordan has done a great job, with show being the 4th time to experience such tutelage.

A word from Wiki about Martin Crimp (UK playwright). Their work exudes ‘multi-faceted theatre, rich in textural and visual nuances, moving beyond rigid groupings of drama types and genres.’ Where else would this be shown but Darlo Drama
