Due to circumstances concerning the covid 19 outbreak the yvca season was cut unfortunately short, meaning the table topping teams would be crowned premiers and the association presentation night would have to be reduced to a simple email. But worry not as it matters less that you got there than it matters how you got there and as far as premiers go the Yarra valley saw some dominant teams this season.

In strachan shield the Yarra Junction eagles lift the flag as the best team in the Yarra valley. Hot on the heels of Wandin up to the Christmas break Yarra Junction put on an unbeaten run that saw them catapult into top spot and end up a game clear of the bulldogs. Yarra junctions depth in both batting and bowling meant there was always another challenge for the opposition and they thoroughly deserve to be named as the creme of the crop in the Yarra valley this season.

Following in the lead of their 1st XI the eagles also lift the raft 2day flag. The nightingale brothers led the way with bat and ball but a complete team allowed Yarra Junction to finish well clear at the top of the ladder as they found answers to every challenge thrown at them this season.

Meanwhile in the most closely contested of the grades it was Warburton-Millgrove that were crowned premiers as they found a way to take top spot in the dying stages of the home and away season. Led by the experience of mick walker Warburtons young side did enough when they needed to to claim the all important top spot come the end of the season, and the young players wearing premiership medals will no doubt become local legends in their own way in years to come.

In one day grade hoddles creeks unbeaten Season rightfully ended with being crowned premiers as no side managed to come close to their dominance this season. They bowled out their nearest rivals poweltown for 87 early in the year and Yarra glen for 49 to show that as a batting heavy side even their bowlers were a class above, and even late in the year they did not waver from their strength as a unit to overcome their opponents.

In the Yarra valleys team of the year this season every DJSS team was represented in the squad of 12 as the best from each club undoubtedly showed they have the mettle to be named in a team of this caliber. The yvca team of the year is as follows:

Each week the umpires in DJSS and both RAFT grades vote on the best players from the day. At the end of the season the player polling the highest number of votes is named the winner of the appropriate medal and this years winners are:

THR Drummond medal-Tim Thorne 18 votes. A remarkable year saw Thorne hit back to back centuries to highlight his season and key performances around those peaks saw him hold off the likes of ash Hamer and Andy Cowan to claim top spot.

VJ Haag medal- brad nightingale 21 votes. After a quiet start to the season nightingale was able to dominate the middle of the season with two 5 wicket hauls and plenty of wickets in between to be crowned the raft best player. He chased down David Marshall in the last 2 rounds as well as the chasing pack of Carl dikschei ray turner and brother josh nightingale.

In the raft 1 day grade the best player medal goes to Jordan Birnie 26 votes. A hard hitting allrounder Birnie hit the second most runs in the grade while also taking 14 wickets showing his all round talent. 4 best on ground performances were enough to see him beat josh sharpe and team mate Clint Sharman in a season where a boy became a man.

Finals cricket has at last started in the Yarra valley and excellent conditions greeted cricketers set for an exciting weekend of play. Teams have toiled all season and are now in the cutthroat, do or die stage of the season. Teams who finished first in the top grades will be keeping their eyes on how their rivals fair as they wait to see who they will be competing against in next weeks finals.

In the premier grade of the Yarra valley, the DJ Strachan Shield it was up to Wandin to bat first in their game against Healesville, as the bulldogs won the toss and duly chose to bat. Daniel Rodgers removed Rhett smith in the 3rd over to give Healesville the perfect start to the day, however the bloods were forced to wait 20 overs for the second wicket as josh Bromiley and Matthew Heriot struck 4 an over in an 80 run partnership. When heriot was run out the ever dangerous Tim Thorne strode to the crease and went about building another strong partnership for Wandin as he put on a century stand with Bromiley and Healesvilles bowlers struggled to make inroads into the batting lineup. Micheal Jackson would be the bloods man to make the breakthrough as he removed Thorne just as he set himself into his innings, However Healesville would have to watch on as Bryce Edwards followed the trend and put on another partnership with Bromiley, who brought up an impressive century to guide the bloods past 200. Ash Hamer and dale senior struck with the ball to remove the Wandin batsmen and help control the scoring, as the bulldogs entered the last 10 overs with 2 new players at the crease. Ben galante struck quick runs late to push the bulldogs towards 300 However when senior and hamer stuck again late in the day the score would be held to a still impressive 297. The score is achievable for Healesville however one would think that the advantage is in wandins favour after they were able to negate the bloods strike bowler Jordan Poynton, taking him for nearly 5 an over and keeping him wicket less may well prove the difference in this game.
Entering day 2 Healesvilles challenging target looked utterly daunting when Stuart Thompson ripped the heart of of the bloods top order taking 3 early wickets, and when Ethan alderman took a fourth it spelled big trouble for the bloods. Ben Wallace stood at the other end throughout the carnage, and when he was joined by ash Hamer the pair went about resurrecting the bloods slim hopes with a 60 run stand. When Thompson dismissed both batsmen in quick succession he completed a 5 wicket haul that reflected wandins dominance in this match and though max minney and the tail end batters would hang around and show some fight, eventually Healesville would be all out for 178. Had the Healesville top order shown what they can do they may very well have chased the total down, as there were still more than 20 overs in the tank, however when 4 of your top 5 fall for 6 or less it is going to be very difficult to win a game. As a result it is Wandin who have earned the right to challenge Yarra junction for the strachan shield in next weeks final on the back of Bromileys century and Thompson’s 5 wicket haul.

In RAFT Blue Coldstream and Healesville played out an evenly matched day of cricket as Coldstream accumulated their way to 7/181. Again for Coldstream it was their young talent that led the way with the bat as youngsters Michael and Daniel Pezzimenti together with Aaron steel and Daniel vaux made the bulk of the runs. Andy jacubowics and Tyler tweedie collected 3 wickets each to prevent any large partnerships while Scott fawdry was unplayable as usual as he dried up the scoring from one end. A larger score could have been for the crocs as 6 batsmen made a solid start without contributing a half century, however for Healesville it will still be a tricky chase as the typically slow Coldstream ground will make scoring difficult. Enter day 2 and it was clear it would not be Healesvilles day as their batsmen struggled to make an impact. Carl dikschie was in riveting form as he collected a rapid 5 wicket haul, while Andy jakubowicz led his team with the bat however without support healesvilles chances vanished before their eyes as they were rolled for 118.

In one day cricket, RAFT Gold saw Woori Yallock overcome launching place in a low scoring thriller at Woori Yallock. Batting first launch scored quickly early on after the wicket of Michael baker as star pair of Clint Sharman and Jordan Birnie got the score moving. Unfortunately for launching place the tigers showed some fight as 1/56 quickly became 4/67, with Adam Dunn and jason young taking 2 wickets apiece. Birnie and Stuart Parker were still at the crease and launch still definitely capable of a large score however when the slow bowling of Paul Broussard captured 4 wickets it was left to Parker to try to drag his side to their allotted 40 overs. Accurate bowling foiled launches plans as Adam Dunn took the final 2 wickets to leave the score at 126 with 10 overs still in the bank. The tigers chase began with Ryan Christie looking ominous as he collected 2 quick wickets however mick Dwyer rallied with Danny hyndman as they took the score to 70 and gave the tigers a firm grip on the game. Clint Sharman wasn’t willing to give up as he sparked belief into launching place with 3 quick wickets including the 2 set batsmen and as the score moved to 7/94 the tigers fragile tail was exposed and the balance swung in favour of launching place. The one thing between launching place and next weeks final was young Corey Winterannette, unperturbed by the launching place advance the teenager stuck several late boundary’s to seal the game for Woori Yallock.

In one day grade semi finals poweltown accounted for Yarra glen thanks to a brilliant team effort with the bat. Making 8/181 poweltowns highest score was Garry mcrorie with 32 however with few batsmen failing to make an impact poweltown made a good score on an extremely slow ground with John woods the best of the bowlers taking 3/22. Yarra glens chase never really took off as the difficult scoring conditions hurt the Yarra Glen batsmen. Nick hurtrup was the best with the bat making 27 as Steven sanders and Garry mcrorie combined for 7 wickets and bowl out the riverpigs for 111.

Hoddles creek dominated Yarra junction in the other one day grade semi as they amassed 5/217 with the bat. Simon Robertson and Paul Healey stuck half centuries while the eagles had 5 wicket takers as no bowlers managed to hold off the hoddles creek onslaught. Yarra Junction were never really in the chase as father and son Simon and Aiden Robertson took the heart out of the Yarra junction chase as Craig smith was the only score past 20. Eventually the eagles would limp to 9/118 from their 40 overs.

This week finals cricket will kick off in the Yarra valley, with juniors the first to start their campaigns. Under 16s will play Wednesday and Friday nights in their 2 day clashes with Healesville hosting Yarra Junction/ Gruyere while Warburton-Millgrove will play hoddles creek at launching place. In the Friday night under 12s Yarra glen will host launching place while Warburton Millgrove will host hoddles creek at Millgrove. Saturday under 12s will see Yarra glen hosting hoddles creek while the Healesville Wandin game will be played at wandin. In under 14s Healesville will host Coldstream and Warburton-Millgrove will host launching place at wesburn.

In senior cricket the Strachan Shield will see Healesville hoping to replicate their form from the last time they played Wandin where they nearly beat the bulldogs in a dramatic draw. Wandin will be heading in as favourites and playing in home conditions they will be hard to beat with the winner due to play Yarra Junction in next weeks final.

In RAFT Blue Yarra junction are straight through to the final and will play the winner out of Coldstream and Healesville. Coldstream will host the encounter and with both sides boasting plenty of young talent this match is set to be a ripping contest.

In RAFT Gold the semi between launching place and Woori Yallock will be played at Woori. Launch narrowly beat the tigers last week but with the sides extremely evenly matched it will come down to how well whether the tigers well balanced side can restrict launches mouth watering batting lineup.

One day grade will see the undefeated hoddles creek host Yarra Junction in a Match that will test the mettle of the eagles bowlers, can they restrict the onslaught of Glen Derix? Only time will tell. Poweltown will host Yarra glen in what is sure to be a high scoring affair. Poweltowns Jake Neale has plundered more than 500 runs this season and will be the key wicket for the riverpigs to take while Yarra glen have genuine threats right down their batting order and will give a serious challenge the poweltown bowlers.

The final day of the regular season is run and done for the Yarra valley as players were met with perfect conditions for cricket. Players can now either look to finals and start planning their charge to the premiership or reflect on a season that has finished without a finals berth and look to find the positives in the development of their side through the season

In the DJSS Yarra junction polished off Healesville after the bloods disappointing batting effort last week. Continuing from their 3/123 last week the eagles put Healesville to the sword as they racked up over 200 in response to Healesvilles 69. Andrew Cowan continued his excellent season with another half century and was well supported by the rest of the batting order. Nick bark batted well at the top while Louis horsfield and Matthew Mallick added substance to the score through the middle order. Mitchell Jackson took a pair of wickets through the middle overs to keep Yarra junction in check while dale senior removed nick bark at the top before taking a pair of late wickets to be the best of the bloods bowlers. Andrew smith and Rhys Matthews ensured Healesville would feel the pain right to the end of the innings as they added handy runs at the end of the day and finished up 8/233. This leaves Yarra junction at the top of the ladder after Gruyeres forfeit this round gave Wandin the points for a win so they maintained the gap behind first place.

In raft blue Bradley nightingale was unplayable fair Yarra junction as he again led the bowlers from the front for Yarra Junction. Delivering 18 overs it took 8 overs before he conceded a run as e took an excellent 4/9, while he was well supported by beau Hawkins and glenn Thompson as together they bowled out Healesville for 78 to take the points in their last game before finals.

In raft gold Danny hyndman led Woori Yallock to 226 against launching place. After a top order collapse thanks to the bowling of Ryan Christie Paul Broussard met hyndman at the crease and they went about putting on a 120 run partnership to resurrect the tiers innings. From hyndman continued his fine innings to record a century while Adam Dunn provided the last meaningful contribution to the score as the tigers innings petered out at the end with Christie finishing with a 5 wicket haul. In reply launching place faced a similar top order collapse as they fell to 4/23 with Jason young amd Lochie Winterannette snaring 2 wickets each. The Launch recovery was led by a steady hand from Stuart Parker while Andrew van Der Vlugt provided an enterprising half century at the other end. The tigers bowlers were unable to nail down their death bowling at the end as Matt McConnell took some pressure off the chase before Parker stuck the winning runs in the final over.

Marysville suffered a loss in their final game of the season after Warburton chased their 159. Levi Ronalds stick a half century at the top of the order through a large part of the Marysville innings while the rest of the batting order contributed starts, with no one going on to add the finishing touches to the innings with Sam Middleton taking 3 wickets. Warburtons chase was guided by a brilliant century from David lever as Warburton chased the score in just 28 overs. Josh sharp was again in the runs at the top of the order to support lever as the pair put on a majority of the chase. In the end the Marysville bowlers lacked the pe*******on to really hold off the Warburton batsmen as they finished up taking 3 wickets.

In one day grade hoddles creek hauled in launching place 3s 109 after 50 to a sequeira, while Yarra Junction got over the line against Yarra glen with Craig smith and Julian Bennett hitting 50 for te eagles while tommy Davey and Jamie Hamilton hit 50 for the riverpigs. Launching place 2 beat Healesville in a low scoring affair while Simon McLaughlin 50 was not enough as hoddles creek 2 went down to poweltown and Wandin defeated Coldstream in another low scoring game

On a warm sunny day in the Yarra valley cricketers began their second last day of play before finals. Bowlers enjoyed the best of conditions as across the board most teams were bowled out for scores below 150.

In the Strachan shield Yarra junctions bowlers dominated Healesville before passing them on day 1. Eagles trio of Kevin Bomford, Caleb Hrabe and Terry Ottrey combined to rip through the bloods in quick time and Dale senior was the only bat to offer any form of resistance as Healesville were bowled out for just 69. Yarra junction now sit 3/123 overnight and will be eyeing an outright victory on day 2

In raft blue Coldstream were skittled by Wandin for 136 in a tough days play. Middle order pair of Carl dikschie and Aaron steel added some substance to the score however Luke chandler kept things in check with 4 wickets while Hamish Lamont took 2.

Yarra junction managed just 1 more than Coldstream as they were rolled for 137. The eagles openers were careful early and both found themselves in the sheds after making useful starts. Tyson gastket kept the score ticking along while Riley foley batted maturely through the middle of the innings. Entering the bowling attack late jack Drummond ripped through the eagles middle to late order as he snared a 6 wicket haul to destroy the work of the eagles top order and leave Healesville needing just 138 to win next week.

Raft gold saw Woori Yallock travel to Marysville where they recorded a comfortable win. The Marysville batsman struggled against disciplined bowling with only Graeme Mitchell passing double figures as he scored over half of Marysvilles total. Adam Dunn was in fine form as he collected 5 wickets and he was well supported by Jason young who took 3. In reply the tigers romped to a 10 wicket victory as openers Michael Dwyer and Corey Winterannette knocked off the runs in just 15 overs

Bucking the trend for the day the game between launching place and Warburton was a high scoring encounter that continually saw balls belted onto the adjoining oval at wesburn park. Launching place got off to a steady start with Clint Sharman setting the example at the top of the order and allowing the rest of the batting order to bat with freedom. An even display of bowling from The burras bowlers kept things in check and stopped any major partnerships forming but launch were still able to keep the score moving towards 200 before Ryan Christie and Matt McConnell blasted 60 runs from the final 5 overs to boost the launch score to 231. Warburtons josh Sharp started well, and when Warburton lost their second wicket at 51 he was joined by Mick Walker. Launch’s good start with the ball was quickly undone as the Warburton pair went about crushing the ball to all parts of the ground, Sharp continued an excellent season as he made a fine 72 while walker dominated the bowlers blasting them to all parts of the ground. He went from 75 to 97 in 4 balls as he hit a hat trick of sixes before reaching his second consecutive century with a boundary. The ball after reaching his century walker delivered such a clean strike that the ball landed well into the neighbouring horse arena as he blasted the remaining runs in little time to win with 6 overs to spare.

In one day grade the Yarra junction batsman, took the example of the other game at wesburn park as they blasted 298 against a launching place 3s that turned to 11 bowlers with Paul Osborne hitting 73. Yarra Junction 2s had 5 batsmen make ducks as they were bowled out for 56, losing to hoddles creek 2s, while hoddles creek 1s defeated poweltown by 20 runs. Yarra glen were led by 50 to Lachlan Crawford as they defeated Healesville and launching place 2s were defeated by 10 wickets as Coldstreams b comben hit 50.

Launching place women’s team are through to the cv east women’s one day final after beating heatherdale in their semi final. Caitlyn Parker took 5 wickets to lead the bowlers as they bowled heatherdale out for 116 with Amanda Morrison and Ellen Bradley taking 2 wickets each while Michelle goldsmith took 1. Launch chased 118 3 wickets down with Goldsmith 31 not out, Morrison making 27 and Bradley blazing 23*

The launching place under 15 girls team lost their semi final on Sunday. Batting first launch hit 6/116 from their 20 overs, April and Lilly Darkin top scoring with 23 and 24 while Ellen Bradley hit 20 and Amelia Kuth hit 17. Unfortunately launch were passed with 3 overs to go by 4 wickets, Brianna Parker, April Darkin and Tessa Simpson all took a wicket while Lilly Darkin got a runout.

Runs flowed in the Yarra valley this week with 4 individuals striking centuries as Mick walker, Clint, Sharman, Jake Neale and under 14 Cody Anderson all dined out on opposition bowling attacks.

In the Strachan shield Yarra Junction toppled Wandin to narrowly take top spot. With Yarra junctions disciplined bowling attack hunting as a pack to take Wandin wickets. Nick Lawlor and Kevin Bomford combined to take 4/4 to reduce Wandin to 5/31 early and as Bomford continued his spell he collected 2 more wickets to take the score to 7/57and have Wandin absolutely reeling and seemingly with no answers. Number 9 Luke Chandler struck 4 big sixes to add some substance to the score as he attacked Rhys Matthews but eventually Matthews had his man as chandler was the last man out to leave Yarra Junction chasing just 96. Wandin got off to the perfect start defending such a small total as Stuart Thompson removed Marcel Kocher and the dangerous Andrew Cowan to leave the eagles 2/9 however the third wicket Nick Bark would not fall until the score read 73. Wandin bowled with discipline to hold Yarra junction for 32 overs but in the end a lack of runs meant Wandin never had much to play with and one decent partnership is all it took for the eagles to claim the game and take top spot with just one round left.

Gruyere chasing Healesvilles overnight score of 212 we in trouble early as Healesvilles opening bowlers Jordan Poynton and Michael Jackson took 2 wicket each to reduce the scorpions to 4/29. Mitch Hodgetts then took command of Gruyere innings as he absorbed the pressure from the Healesville bowlers and tried to get the innings back on track. There was resistance from Ron Morrison, Colin Pendry and Rowan Prouse however in the end the top order failures means there was too much work to be done by the middle order as glen Poynton was joined by Jordan Poynton in removing the last 4 wickets for just 12 runs as Gruyere were wrapped up for 142.

In raft blue Yarra junction confidently chased Wandins 123 from last week. After a couple of early wickets to the Wandin openers beau Hawkins came to the crease and dominantly hit the bulldogs to all parts of the ground, as he hit 75 out of the 95 runs scored while he was at the crease. When Hawkins departed it was a simple task for the eagles middle orde to chip off the last few runs required to record a win.

Continuing from their precarious position from last week Healesville went from 6/64 to all out for 73 as Daniel vaux collected 3 wickets to set a very achievable chase for the crocs. Steady wickets fell throughout the Coldstream chase and no batsman managed to set themselves for a decent innings however Coldstream still eased themselves 5 wickets down as they passed the bloods score before late wickets meant Coldstream were bundled out for 114 with Allan Pearce taking 3 wickets.

In raft gold Yarra valley stalwart Mick walker pulled off a stunning century to drag Warburton to a winning total against Woori Yallock. Warburton were struggling early as Woori Yallock held their catches to get the score to 4/26, from there walker had small partnerships with several batsmen through the middle order with no one really stamping their authority on the game as Woori Yallock continued to turn the screws with tight bowling. When the 8th wicket fell in the 35th over Warburton were only 125 however walker showed his experience as he pummelled tigers bowlers to put on a 65 run partnership where tarkyn nicolandos hit just 1 run. Walker took 16 off the final over of the innings to finish unbeaten on 100 not out. In reply Woori set themselves a solid foundation to chase the target with mic Dwyer and Kieran cantwell putting on 90 to leave the tigers needing 70 in the last 12 overs. Tight bowling from the Burras forced the Woori batsmen into mistakes and as the wickets fell the only thing keeping the tigers in the game were the 33 wides from the Warburton bowlers however in the end the man of the moment Walker took the final 2 wickets in an over to leave Woori 7 runs short.

Marysville batted first against launching place with Travis Gleeson holding the top order together as he fell just short of a half century. The launching place bowlers kept the pressure on without truely penetrating the Marysville batting order until Clint Sharman came on to take 3 wickets in quick succession. Rhys hodgins and Chris Ronalds added substance to the score through the middle order as they put on 70 before Jordan Birnie cleaned up the tail with 3 wickets in an over to leave launch chasing 168. Launch started well with with the first wicket falling for 35 and the second at 81 with opener Clint Sharman still at the crease. Marysvilles bowlers bowled well in patches without putting any significant pressure on launch to lift their scoring rate. After drinks Dave Falconer partnered Sharman and the pair polished off the last 60 runs required in 7 overs, with Sharman bringing up his second century of the season as he finished unbeaten on 104.

In one day grade the highlight was poweltowns crushing win over launching place 2s. Batting first the entire batting order contributed as they got to 9/162 in 35 overs with captain Jake Neale returning to the crease after retiring on 50. Neale proceeded to crunch 63 runs from the next 5 overs to be the first batsman this season to hit a century in the one day grade. Neale finished 113 not out and poweltown had set the daunting total of 229. In response launching place were in disarray as poweltown tore through their batting order to bowl them out for 32 and record a 197 run win.

In other games in one day grade launching place 3 had Adam Johnson hit 50 as they lost to Coldstream with p Harris hitting 53, hoddles creek bowled out Yarra Junction for 79 and chased that 6 wickets down and Healesville were beaten by hoddles creek 2s who chased down 86.
