Speaking on Twitch, Gaël Monfils opened up about the effect his separation from Elina Svitolina has taken on him mentally and his ability to prepare for the final stretch of his career.

Gael: “The breakup with Elina hit me really hard. I'm not doing great mentally, I can't train the way I'd like to...I'm not going to pretend otherwise, I'm eating less, everything feels worse. It's already very hard to return to the courts for my retirement, with different emotions. I just didn’t find it possible to play.”

Monfils confirmed that he officially retired on October 5th and said he ultimately didn’t feel he was in the right place mentally to return to competition.

He will still get the chance to say goodbye to the tennis world at the Paris Masters on November 3rd, where they will hold a special celebration of his career giving him one final moment in front of his home crowd.

The difference between winning and finishing runner-up in Lyon 😭

Lorenzo Musetti beat Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4 to take the title and walked away with a custom blue lion sculpture created by French artist Richard Orlinski.

Fritz’s runner-up prize was… a bit smaller 😅
