Melbourne Hapkido MARTIAL ARTS • SELF DEFENCE • WELLBEING
We offer adults classes, kids classes, and women's self defence courses in a fun and safe environment.

Learn Hapkido in our modern dojang at Elwood Beach, Melbourne, Australia. Come learn practical self defence and martial arts in a friendly, supportive and safe environment. The culture of our club is as important as the arts taught and we have a strong focus on maintaining a supportive, collaborative and friendly training environment. Students work together to achieve their training goals – not on

inflating their egos. MARTIAL ARTS / SELF DEFENCE

Hapkido is a comprehensive martial art with a strong self defence focus that incorporates striking, a powerful arsenal of kicks ranging from low to high, locks, throws, take-downs and weapons – both traditional and practical. With a wide range of techniques and the 3 unpinning principals of 1) harmony 2) water and 3) circular movement, Hapkido is an effective and adaptable martial art. Hapkido allows the practitioner to build their personal repertoire of techniques and strategies that best suits their body type, strengths/weakness and temperament. It is suitable for all genders and ages. Hapkido incorporates the discipline, respect and etiquette of traditional martial arts with the effectiveness of a modern and practical self defence system. WELLBEING

Develop functional fitness, conditioning and core strength via regular training while learning a practical skill set for life. We focus on developing both the physical skill set and mindset to achieve your training goals. Our classes also incorporate meditation to help focus the mind, develop mindfulness and awareness (from a martial arts / self defence perspective) and to put into practice day to day to contribute to the individual's general wellbeing. Melbourne Hapkido is a proud member of the Australian Hapkido Association, one of Australia's oldest and most progressive Hapkido associations.

It’s easy in the heat of the moment to react and focus on applying a technique, but it’s the three underpinning principles of Hapkido that allow us to apply a technique effectively. i.e. Harmony, Circular Movement and Water.

Employ the principles before the technique and protect yourself – cover, block, move off the line; take the attacker’s balance and structure; then respond with the appropriate technique.

Applying the principles allows you to respond – not react – and to adapt to the situation. Self defence is fluid and often messy.

There is a difference between learning and applying a technique. Focusing on the principles allows us to bridge the gap.

Hwa (화) - HARMONY
Do not meet force with force e.g. if your attacker pushes you pull, if they pull you push. Blend with their movement and use their own momentum against them, move them to a position that favours you.

Won (원) - CIRCULAR MOVEMENT
Redirect linear attacks into a circular pattern. Circles help you generate centrifugal force and control an attacker’s balance. Be the centre of the storm.

Mul (물)- WATER
Be flexible and adaptable. Like water, your defence or attack should flow around an obstacle adjusting to the opponent’s reactions.

DEFENCE AGAINST FRONT HEADLOCK:
1. Tuck chin in while securing attacker’s wrist or arm and drop your weight to protect your airway.
2. Strike attacker’s groin.
3. Push upwards and turn with attacker’s wrist and forearm pinned to your chest into a corkscrew lock. Note: use your legs and core to push up.

Take ownership of your training.

Instead of just passively following along in your classes, take an active role in your training. In discussion with your instructor or mentor:

* Assess your current situation.
* Establish your training goals.
* Develop a plan.
* Take the necessary actions to achieve these. Consistency is the key.

You don’t have to do this alone. We need our fellow students and instructors to help us progress, but you do need to drive it.
