My son got what we assumed was a mozzie bite while we were in the heart of the Sabah jungle on the Kinabatangan River and he couldn’t stop scratching.

I reached into my bag, grabbed my Ni**le Butter and thought… well, it’s not what it’s designed for, but it’s all I had haha!

With ingredients like organic calendula, chickweed, marshmallow root, aloe vera and herb infused olive oil, it actually helped soothe and moisturise the irritated skin and thankfully, stopped the scratching.

A glimpse into the very important perks of private practice 😌

Finished a Breastfeeding Appointment and was literally driving past Chadstone… so naturally, had to stop for a coffee and a little shopping.

Private practice perks = flexible days, doing work I genuinely love and the occasional coffee & shopping detour haha.

If breastmilk is the perfect food, why doesn’t it provide enough vitamin D?

Because vitamin D is different from most nutrients.

Human milk contains very little vitamin D because humans have historically obtained most of their vitamin D through sun derived vitamin D synthesis, rather than relying on dietary vitamin D alone.

Breastmilk itself isn’t “deficient” in the pathological sense its vitamin D concentration is naturally low. Whether this becomes a concern for an individual infant depends on their other sources and risk factors.

I used to dread my first hospital shift back after annual leave 😩

I’d return to work feeling miserable, counting down until I could go home.

Fast forward to today… I’ve just returned from annual leave and I’m genuinely so happy to be back at work.

So, what changed?

I moved into breastfeeding-focused private practice.

But more than that, I found my way back to the parts of Midwifery I love most; woman-centred care, evidence-based breastfeeding support, autonomy and making a real difference.
