Protect yourself from swooping Magpie attacks when you're on the bike! Australian and Kiwi Cyclists can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that someone has finally solved a unique problem. PieProof is a bicycle helmet that protects the rider by providing the confidence to calmly ride past aggressive Magpies (and Plovers). There's no need to look like you're trying to communicate with aliens! PieProo

f is stylish, lightweight and well ventilated. Orders are now being accepted for immediate despatch. A PieProof helmet won't stop Magpies from attacking you when you're on the bike (not much will!), but this Australian designed helmet provides a high level of protection against sharp beaks and claws. Designed by cyclists, for cyclists

The concept of PieProof cycle helmets was born following what seemed like a particularly aggressive 2022 Magpie swooping season. Two bloodied ears, and a head gash on the bike paths were followed by relentless attacks over 3 days on the magnificent Great Victorian Rail Trail. We asked ourselves, 'Why hasn't someone done something about this?'

The answer to that question is PieProof, a year-round, lightweight and well ventilated solution to a problem that has plagued cyclists for way too long!

Ride Report - Acheron Way, 56km - 600m.
A generation of cyclists have been introduced to some of the best riding in Victoria via the Giro della Donna, a 125km ride that takes in some stunning high-country sights with more than a few challenging climbs. If you're keen to stay off the roads and avoid the worst of the climbs, then this hidden gem is for you. The 56km out & back ride follows a narrow road that is sealed for about two thirds of its length and takes in magnificent tall timbers, ferns, crystal clear streams and if you're lucky, lyre birds (we saw 2 on the trip). Over the course of the ride, we saw only 3 cars and two other riders on a mid-week trip. I've run into a few interstate riders of late who are spending a couple of weeks in Vic doing some rail trails including the Great Vic, and the Great Southern rail trails. I think this would be an excellent addition to any itinerary particularly as you can include the magnificent Lilydale - Warburton trail. You could pack a small backpack, ride from Lilydale to Warburton, stay overnight, tackle Acheron Way the next day, stay overnight again in Warby, and then return to Lilydale. Full Disclosure - This route would entail riding halfway up Mount Donna Buang to meet the intersection of Acheron Way. The other option is to drive to the intersection Acheron Way with the Narbethong - Maysville Road and ride out & back. It is a steady 20km climb of 1-4% followed by a gravelly and pot holed descent of 8km to get to the turnaround point. It's not difficult, but it would be a cinch on an e-Bike. Details of the ride are in the link below.

A recent overnight cycling trip got me thinking about the value of cycle tourism to local communities that invest in infrastructure such as Rail Trails. It's a pretty compelling story! Check out your options Australia-wide

RIDE REPORT: Murray to Mountains rail trail.

I was lucky enough to do a big chunk of the Murray to Mountains rail trail this week in superb Autumn conditions. The trail has it all - scenery, public art, food, coffee and wine.

DAY 1: Wangaratta - Yackandandah (67Km)
The first 25km outside of Wang are a bit dull. Flat and straight (perfect for a railway really!) until the 15 Km uphill haul into Beechworth begins and along with it some more interesting terrain. The climb is long, but it doesn't exceed 4% so it's a case of head down and grind away. Beechworth is a beautiful town (aren't they all up this way) and is ample reward for the long climb. The ride to Yack is largely downhill so take care as there are some unexpectedly sharp corners. The final descent into Yack is exhilarating, but again could quickly turn ugly as you coast at more than 40km/hr. I couldn't face the return ride to Beechworth (No, I don't really like climbing hills) so I had to call the sag wagon! We overnighted in Beechworth at 12 on Albert and had a great meal and a few wines at Tanswell's Commercial Hotel which had good food and a great atmosphere.

DAY 2: Beechworth - Bright (74Km)
What goes up must come down so the descent from Beechworth to Everton Station is a great payoff for the previous day's long climb. The ride to Bright through the Buckland valley is stunning and only seems to improve as you approach Bright. The trail mostly runs parallel to the highway so it's maybe not as serene as you may have hoped. Bright is another beautiful town that caters very well for cyclists and anyone with a healthy appetite. I won't go on, you can read a far more detailed report from writer here https://www.railtrails.org.au/trails/murray-to-mountains-rail-trail/

LOGISTICS: You could rail to Wang, but I was fortunate enough to have my lovely partner along for the trip. She doesn't ride, but does love a long walk. She would drive ahead of me and do a long walk in each of our destinations before I rolled into town dusty, tired and hungry.

BIKE CHOICE. The entire trail is sealed. I did it on a gravel bike but would have been equally happy on a road bike (Maybe even happier on an e-Bike...) It is really a trail suitable for all kinds of bikes.

COST: I've been thinking about the value of cycle tourism to local communities and think it's worth more of a comment. I'll gather the receipts and post my thoughts sometime next week.

NEXT: I'll get another VIC trail in during May before tackling the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail. I'm excited!

It's Autumn - Time to hit the trails! This is the best time of year to ride, not too hot, not too cold, beautiful colours and no angry Magpies... If you're at a loss for something to do this weekend, jump onto for some inspo. There are over 100 rail trails in Australia that support everything from multi day rides, to short, flat rides of a few kilometres which are suitable for the whole family. The best thing about rail trails (Apart from the fact that they are generally in beautiful, peaceful, zero traffic environments) is the fact that old steam trains couldn't climb hills any steeper than about 3%. That means you don't have to either!
These pics were taken last week on the Great Southern Rail Trail between Leongatha and Bena. This week it's the Murray to Mountains rail trail where I'm expecting a lot more Autumn colour and next month it's off to my old home state of Queensland to finally ride the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail. Can't wait!

Meet Luke, or is it Luca? This is a slightly better pic the Kangaroo that I posted a while ago thinking it was an albino. It's not. Some kangaroos have a genetic variation called leucism which means that they have a loss of pigmentation. Albino animals by contrast have a total inability to produce melanin meaning their skin and fur are white, and their eyes pink. Still not a great pic as it was taken from 400m away on the Main Yarra Trail at 100x zoom. This mob sure likes to keep its distance!

Bike helmets are one of those things that we grudgingly buy in the hope that we'll never need them. PieProof customer Jerry Wong ran out of luck recently when he hit a concealed obstacle at 25km/hr. Jerry lost control of the bike and hit the deck injuring his ribs, hand and shoulder. Jerry said that the helmet took the brunt of the impact and you can see from the photos that it has done its intended job by deforming and absorbing the impact. Jerry is OK and is currently making a painful recovery.
I have noticed an increase in the number of helmetless people riding bikes, e-bikes and particularly scooters of late. Yes, I have a vested interest in people wearing bike helmets, but I also have a vested interest in Australian riders staying safe and avoiding crashes, head injuries or worse.
Many years ago while riding with a group I heard a noise and turned around to see my good pal sliding down a suburban street with his head being belted repeatedly by a bluestone kerb. He had a broken scapula and multiple abrasions, but was fortunately otherwise intact including his head (mostly...) Yes, helmets mess up your hair, and they're inconvenient, but when something goes wrong they are cheap insurance against potentially catastrophic consequences. Just ask Jerry.
Stay safe, Leo.

An albino Kangaroo!
If you've never seen an albino kangaroo in the wild you may be in luck (If you're in Melbs that is). These animals are quite rare with this mutation occurring at a rate of approximately one in 50,000. I spotted this guy yesterday on the Northern side of the Main Yarra trail approximately 500m East of Rosanna golf club (~20Km from the CBD). Apologies for the poor photo quality, I'll try to get another pic next week using a proper camera. If you do visit this mob of beautiful animals, please keep your distance and let them be. Kangaroos can be dangerous if they feel threatened.

First light on the Murray River brings a deafening wakeup call from the locals! It's a beautiful spot to camp, plus there are hundreds of kilometres of flat, deserted tracks to cycle beside the mighty Murray. The Sulphur Crested Cockatoos hog the limelight, but the variety and quantity of birdlife is nuts!
