Home from Lismore and wow that weekend felt like a month!

Overall, Gav did really well. There were probably more mistakes than we’ve become used to and we definitely left a few opportunities on the table but there was plenty of grit, some really good pace and a heap of learning.

Friday was all about getting to know the track and its quirks. Unfortunately, an early incident in qualifying left us starting from the back on a short, tight circuit where passing isn't easy.

The heats were tough, but his pace was better than the record shows. We just couldn't quite put everything together when it mattered.

The wet conditions added another challenge and honestly, all the kids did an incredible job handling what was thrown at them.

We eventually came away with P7. I genuinely believe Gav had the pace to finish around P4 or P5, but mistakes are part of racing and I'm sure everyone who finished behind the winner has their own story about what might have been.

One thing we're starting to notice is that Gav seems to find another level when the finals come around. Now we just need to figure out how to unlock that same confidence and commitment a little earlier in the weekend!

Plenty to be proud of, plenty to work on, and another big step in his development.

Now for a quick turnaround as we head back to Ipswich Kart Club for the Capri Cup.

This one means a little more to me personally. Alf and Maureens' contribution to the sport has been enormous. I'm genuinely excited to have Gav taking part in an event that means so much.

Another weekend, another opportunity. Can't wait!

Day 1 at Lismore Kart Club for the Ultimate Club Racer 2026 and we started on the back foot.
A minor contact that could have been much worse ended Qualifing before it started. It could have been worse.

Racing has been tough to, its nice to see him having a red hot go and not pulling out of passes or not being ok with just following!

That comes with mistakes but, this boy always digs dep and gets quicker and quicker each session and as he said 'it's all practice for the one the counts'

Bring on the final!

Race week and this time we’re heading south to Lismore, Northern NSW, for the Ultimate Club Champion!

The weather leading up to the event looks better suited to ducks, hopefully the sun makes an appearance for race weekend. Either way, I reckon the Cadet 9s will bring the heat - rain, hail (helmets) or shine!

It’s our first visit to Lismore so there’s plenty for Gav and Dad to learn. We’re not heading down expecting a win, but a top half finish would be a fantastic result.

The focus is simple, learn the track, build confidence and enjoy the challenge. There will be mistakes, probably plenty of them but that’s part of the fun. The important thing is learning, having a laugh and getting a little better every session.

Big weekend ahead. Let's go racing!

Home from the Castledine Challenge at Ipswich Kart Club, and another really positive weekend for Gavin!

It certainly wasn't all smooth sailing. We struggled with a few thing and I suspect the engine might be contributing to some of our challenges.

But one of the biggest positives came from Gav himself. He gave me some really good feedback about the kart, I trusted what he was telling me, made the changes and sure enough, we started getting back towards where we expected to be.

Ultimately, we finished P13, set a new personal best lap and more importantly, Gav made some great decisions out on track. We both came away with more knowledge, more confidence and a few more pieces of the puzzle starting to fit together.

That's a pretty good weekend in my books!

Next up, Lismore Kart Club for the Ultimate Club Racer. Plenty to work on and thinking about between now and then but we're excited for the challenge.

Race day at Ipswich Kart Club for the Castledine Challenge!

Yesterday’s practice left us scratching our heads a little. Some of the things we thought were positive didn’t quite translate the way we hoped, but in other areas we made some really good progress.

A few things to figure out, but that’s all part of racing and learning.

Today we’re keeping it simple, have some fun, race hard, enjoy the experience and hopefully make a little magic happen!

A substantially shorter road trip this weekend!

We’re heading to IPSWICH KART CLUB for the Castledine Challenge, a special event on the Ipswich calendar recognising the Castledine family and their long contribution to karting Events like this are a great reminder that Karting is built around families who give their time, energy and support to keep the sport moving forward.

Gav is really starting to put a few things together now, so I’m interested to see how he goes against his peers. The focus stays the same, keep learning, keep closing the gap and most importantly, enjoy racing.

And somehow we’re squeezing all of this into Bathurst weekend!

While the big cars tackle the Mountain, it’ll be pretty cool watching the next generation battling away at the kart track. I’m sure a few of the kids racing at Ipswich this weekend are already well and truly on the pathway towards their own Great Race dreams.

Should be a cracker of a weekend.

Home from the Whitsundays, and what an absolute monster of a trip! We had a blast.
I think it’s fair to say we were both a little overwhelmed at times. A completely different circuit, surface, gearing and corner types that really exposed some areas we need to work on. But that was exactly why we made the trip.
We weren’t chasing a result. We went to learn, experiment and document everything we could. And boy, did we learn!
I reckon I changed just about everything on the kart at least once.
By the end of the weekend, things were starting to click. We were finding pace, becoming competitive and getting involved in some proper racing.
Race 4 was where things literally came together. Unfortunately, we were on the unlucky end of an incident and recorded a DNF. Gav was pretty disappointed, but these are kids learning to race, and everyone involved is on their own journey and happens sometimes.
In the final, Gav missed the start but fought back through the opening corners and was running as high as P3. He eventually slipped back to P5, later classified P4, although we're still not entirely sure why?!
The biggest takeaway? We’ve come home with a heap of notes, some new ideas and plenty of excitement about what we can improve. Gav has been working hard on his track notes and I have just as much homework to do!
A massive thank you to Whitsunday Moto Sports Club - Karting for a fantastic weekend and to everyone who made us feel welcome.
Now for a few events closer to home before Ultimate Club Racer at Lismore Kart Club later this year.
What a trip. What a sport. And what a privilege to share these adventures with Gav!

Road trip north, and our first visit to Whitsunday Kart Club in Airlie Beach!

Gav is absolutely loving it up here. His verdict? The track is fast, flowing and a heap of fun!

It’s been a long day with five practice sessions, and we made the most of every one, experimenting with different racing lines and kart setups.

Tomorrow we bolt on some fresh tyres for qualifying and see what we can put together.

No big expectations, just hoping for a fun weekend, plenty of good racing and another step forward in what has been a fantastic year of learning for Gav.

Can’t wait to get into it!

From leaving the track deflated Saturday to standing on the second step Sunday.

QLD Formula Ford round done, P2 overall!

Saturday was tough. We weren’t quite as quick as we hoped and had an electrical issue thrown into the mix. I definitely left the track feeling a little flat.

But we charged on! From there we finished inside the top three for the remainder of the weekend, led every race at some point and picked up fastest lap in two of the four races.

The funny thing is, I didn’t really think about the championship all weekend. I just focused on enjoying the racing, pushing hard and having a good time doing it.

P2 overall, good pace, two fastest laps and the car is going home without a scratch.

That feels pretty bloody good.

One more Formula Ford race for 2026. Can’t wait!
