Well, this could certainly be enticing for our race team!

I’ve raced with and against Benny on plenty of occasions over the years. I’m not sure if Dad ever actually raced with him, but I do know the two of them have shared more than their fair share of red wine together!

It’s been 12 years since I last raced a kart, but this could be a great opportunity for my boys and me to get out there together and enjoy one of my all-time favourite tracks.

Could be a lot of fun. Keen to see who else wants to come out and play!

A big weekend at Toowoomba & Lockyer Valley Kart Club.

Two days of racing, two different directions, and plenty to learn.

Saturday was a massive challenge for Gavin. He'd never raced the reverse layout before and had just one 8 minute practice session to learn it before heading straight into qualifying.

He struggled early but worked through it. By the end of the day he was back competing with the drivers we would normally expect him to be around.

Sunday was where it really started to come together.

Great starts, a new PB, and importantly, he was sticking with the lead pack for those opening laps rather than watching them disappear.

For Gav, there was another little milestone too, getting within 8 tenths of the leader and around 5 tenths of the lead packs fastest times.

They're only numbers, but for us they're a massive sign that the work, learning and effort are starting to come together. We still have a long way to go and that's part of the fun.

But the best moment of the weekend? The smile, fist bump and "thank you" as we left the track.

We put a lot into this, but seeing him making friends, loving the sport and appreciating everything it gives him beyond just racing makes it all worthwhile.

This weekend was never about results. It was about learning.

We headed to IPSWICH KART CLUB knowing we were stepping into arguably Australia's premier kart club, with a 24-Kart Cadet 9 field that would be right at home at a State or National Championship. If we wanted to improve, this was exactly where we needed to be.

The biggest positive was seeing Gavin continue to grow as a driver. As he gains confidence and understanding, he's beginning to race rather than simply drive. That brings a whole new set of challenges, split second decisions, racecraft and pressure that can only be learned by being in the middle of the action.

One of the highlights came in the final after a DNS in Heat 2, caused by a simple issue that left us starting from the very back of the grid. Gavin produced some of his best racing yet, setting up passes, thinking ahead and showing patience rather than just diving for every gap. There were mistakes too, including one hard fought battle where Gavin chose to spin rather than drive into another competitor when the door closed. It wasn't the outcome we wanted, but it was the arguably the right decision and another reminder of just how difficult this sport is for young drivers making split second decisions at speed. It's quite impressive.

We finished 13th and while there is still plenty of work ahead, we're genuinely happy with the progress. Every weekend we're arriving with new ideas, learning more as a family team and leaving with an even clearer understanding of what we need to work on next.

Most importantly, Gavin climbed out of the kart with a huge smile and was incredibly proud of what he'd achieved.

This weekend we're back at Ipswich Kart Club, another opportunity for Gavin to continue learning, building confidence and putting everything we've worked on into practice.....race!

With an incredible field of 23 Cadet 9 drivers, there'll be plenty of close racing and valuable experience to gain. Every lap is another chance to improve and that's exactly what this season is all about.

We're excited to hit the track, enjoy the challenge and see where we stack up against such a quality field. A huge thank you to everyone who continues to support our journey. We can't wait to get into it!

What a weekend.

We went into Gavin's first Panelfab Queensland State Title knowing exactly what it was, a massive learning opportunity against some of the best Cadet 9 drivers in the country and learn we did!

Across the weekend, Gavin found almost nine tenths of a second, but more importantly, his driving took a huge step forward. His confidence grew, his awareness improved and the intensity of the competition really opened his eyes to what's possible in the sport.

And now he wants more.

In the final, Gavin was racing hard, making passes and pushing his limits. On the last lap, while fighting for one more position, he dropped a wheel off the track and had a little spin. A disappointing way to finish but that's racing and sometimes when you're pushing forward and testing your limits, these things happen.

We couldn't be prouder of his progress and attitude. He wasn't just circulating, he was racing, passing karts and fighting for more right to the final lap.

A massive thank you to everyone who offered advice, guidance and support throughout the weekend. We genuinely appreciate every bit of help we received. There are some great people in this sport, and we're grateful for those who took the time to help us move forward.

We came to learn. We leave faster, more confident, more aware, and very excited about what's ahead.

This weekend showed Gavin the level he wants to reach and left him more determined than ever to get there. 🏁

Finals Day:

This weekend Gavin has had a really full on time. The amount of info this 9 year old has taken in, thought about and delivered has already make me proud before the final even starts.

Bring on the finals and thank you to those who have offered some ideas and helpes the little fella get some speed!

It's race week! 🏁

This weekend, Gavin takes on his first Queensland Karting Championship, lining up against the best Cadet 9 drivers in the country, all aged 7 to 9 years old.

With a grid of more than 30 karts, it'll be his toughest challenge yet.

His goals are realistic. We know there's still speed to find, but our recent shakedown was a massive step forward and we're excited to see how far we've come.

For Gavin, it's about learning, improving and giving it everything on every lap.

Well, the reality is I don’t really have the right to post the amazing Bathurst podium and Race Win moments if I’m not also willing to post the tough weekends too.

This one was tough.

Friday rolled around and the car came straight out of the trailer fast. It was balanced, predictable and genuinely competitive from the first laps.

Then Saturday came, and things turned.

We qualified P2 but unfortunately suffered suspension damage during the session which ultimately ended in a crash and a DNS for Race 1.

After a massive effort Saturday night to fully repair and prep the car again before leaving the track, we rolled into Sunday ready to fight back. Unfortunately, after missing Race 1 and not getting a complete qualifying session, we miscalculated our fuel burn and Race 2 ended in a DNF. Short maybe 700m worth of fuel.

Race 3 though, that one honestly felt like a win. Starting from the back, we fought our way back through to P2. After the weekend we were having, just seeing the start lights felt like a victory, so to recover solid championship points was massive.

Race 4 was shaping up to be something special. Four cars fighting for the lead, absolutely flat out, inches apart at over 180km/h. It was proper open wheel racing. Aggressive, committed, and unbelievably good fun. Unfortunately, an intermittent miss developed during the race and dropped us from P3 back to P6, which more or less summed up the weekend.

But honestly, I still got to drive a race car and as frustrating as the damage, DNFs and championship hits are, how cool is that! The racing was an absolute blast and there are still so many opportunities ahead. To be anything other than committed moving forward would just be a poor example for the junior karting side of this team.

Massive thanks to Caitlyn for helping source parts and getting them to us so quickly. Thanks to Michael, Yippy, Dylan, Brady and Jack for the huge effort getting me back on track.

And also, thanks to the competitors and rival teams that offered help over the weekend. Formula Ford might be fiercely competitive on track, but off track everyone just wants to see cool race cars out there racing hard. That’s something pretty special.

Thanks for helping us get back out there.…But I’m coming for you all next round.

Yesterday’s practice went really well. The car had good pace, and we were right there or thereabouts on times across the sessions.

I’ve got a feeling today is going to be close, tough, and important from the very first qualifying lap. These are the days you look forward to.

Can’t wait to get into it.
