We live in the influencer world where we are drawn to think that anything unpleasant is bad when in fact the dose of the ‘unpleasant’ can be both positive and necessary or it can be very negative and unnecessary.

If you’re not getting tired, slightly sore, mentally fatigued and certain sessions are not extremely tough, then you’re likely not making much improvement long term.

Recognising when the dose is right is tricky however and that’s why coaches exist to help you understand what’s a healthy dose of fatigue and when you do need to really pull back. RPG can help you take the next step in your performance.

"I don’t really care about swim pace in sessions. I do care about feelings though (and not just because I’m a new age emotionally sensitive coach)!

Here’s why …

In the same week, pace in the pool for different effort level can vary wildly.

I’m on the deck regularly and I see it across all intensities with swimmers, Zone 2 can be 5 sec per 100m different on a day to day basis.

It’s totally not a reflection of fitness but of the nature of how easily affected swimming can be by fatigue from cycling, running and other variables such as pool temp, depth, squad swimming with draft and shared suffering lowering pain perception. Not to mention life stress and general fatigue.

Focus on the prescribed intensity (feelings!) and stop beating yourself up or celebrating too much if the pace is fast or slow for the effort. Trust that if you’re doing what is prescribed in terms of the effort, and putting in the consistent work practicing good technique then come race day after freshening up, you’ll be swimming well!"

The Hills are Alive with the Sound of Muscle Fatigue ... 😬😅🎶

As anyone who has raced a marathon will tell you, the aerobic and muscular fatigue of the event is already an incredible assault on the body. Add in the stress of the hills of Sydney and you have a serious challenge ahead of you.

We've done all the leg work so you don't have to.

The minimum effective training dose is the goal. That doesn't mean it's a small dose. For some it could be a huge training load but the rule still applies.

Once the training load is not providing benefits and just creating risk then it no longer makes sense.

Why you’re probably doing the bulk of your running too fast.

I’m perpetually scratching my head as to why an ‘easy’ run for elite runners who are approx 2:18-2:30 marathoners is the same pace as what a 3-4 hour marathoner will consider an easy run.

For the time crunched athlete I’ll always argue that zone 1 riding is not a good use of your time. Zone 1 running however, is an excellent and safe way to build aerobic efficiency and muscular resilience on the run.

Even if you’re in zone 2, the range is quite large and ‘easy’ should be at the very low end of that zone. The majority of amateur athletes are doing the bulk of their running, which should be easy at the top end of zone 2 or even zone 3. You don’t have to suffer that often to improve your running! In fact, it’s best you don’t.

If the some of the fastest marathoners and triathletes in the world are running some of their easy runs at 5 min/km pace you are definitely on the right track doing some easy runs at 6:30/km pace.
