Being Better on the Mat ...
Paying attention to detail - noticing and appreciating the details is what separates the great from the merely good. This habit can transform our lives in many ways.
Also - being the kind of training partner that everyone wants to train with. - everyone has their own back-story, their own particular motivation to begin training; their reasons may not be your reasons - look after your partner emotionally as well as physically.

1% improvement - rinse and repeat!
Just keep taking small steps - this is how we get places. Lots of small steps. 1% closer. 1% better. 1% faster. 1% more savings. 1% warmer, cooler, etc.
Personally, I have never really been about ‘goals’. I’ve never spent much time setting goals. I have always preferred a ‘fuzzy goal’ mindset - keeping in mind a vague direction I want to take - but keeping my focus on where I am right now, and what I am doing right now. That 1% is what has always mattered to me. And it’s always paid dividends. Plus … it keeps you tethered to ‘living now’ - and being more ‘present’ in daily life.

The people on the mat (at least on our mat - Redcat) come in, for the most part, as strangers. Over time., through shared learning and experience, the become a community - many become best of friends - some, even marry! When the culture is supportive and design for optimal learning, trust is built - and that trust forms the foundation of the culture at Redcat. A mat full of totally, self-centred and self-interested people, is not the kind of environment we want to create - I've been in, and trained in environments like that - and I can tell you, hand on heart, the 'toxicity' simply isn't worth it. Life is short - and everyones time is valuable - choose wisely, always, when choosing the type of people we want to spend our time with.

Congratulations to the most-excellent James Deigan - who hit the most coveted milestone on the martial arts landscape last night. A real privilege for me to tie his BJJ Black Blet on, for the first time! James brings the heat on the mat, with his technical nd multi-faceted 'game' - but he also brings the care and respect to everyone he interacts with. James is a 'culture-builder' - he adds so much value to the mat - and last night was also an opportunity to acknowledge that. Technical excellence and impeccable character - that's the perfect combination. Enjoy this milestone James - deepest love and respect from all of us at Redcat.

it fels like such a privilege to be able to spend time with and guide this fantastic crew in the Jiu Jitsu journey. Holding strong relationships, some for decades, is one of life's most joyful and meaningful accomplishments. What a crew ...

unfit, confident, meek, etc - none of that matters much with regard to outcomes - we make everyone competent - we get everyone improving and creating better versions of themselves. What does seem to matter though - is how they interact wit others. Some people are all about themselves, and they need to learn how to be great partners, or often they won’t last - others seem to be able to bring value to all they interact with; these kinds of people tend to go a long way. It's somewhat ironic - that the more we think about being there for others as much as we are there for ourselves - the better we become.
Posted this pic a few weeks ago - but, it's the perfect pic for this post. And so, here it is again ...

Working defence and escapes is the way to build confidence. True confidence flows from knowing we are safe; ironically, the more faith we have in our ability to 'protect', to ‘bounce back and ‘recover’, the more likely we are to take risks. Build safety nets - then we can take more risks. Safety nets first!

Two greats on the mat: The wonderful Andrew Fennelly and Tom. Tom just moved to Melbourne - whichever mat picks him up - will really benefit from him being there. All the best Tom - you will be sorely missed.

Fractional points-of-difference matter. On the right Jiu Jitsu mat, we realise that paying attention to the details affords us a better-than average understanding of a technique or concept; and so over time, we develop an appetite for nuance and detail - and then, if the stars align, that 'noticing' and that 'appreciation' flows out into other aspects of our lives.

Chuck was a friend of ours, and his passing today is saddening. He was a lovely, well-meaning, generous, and talented human being - the world was better off having him in it.
Melissa just reminded me of often having lunch or dinner with him while I was on the mat teaching in Los Angeles. He also had me out to teach the UFAF black belts every year in Las Vegas, and we had many great conversations. Watching movies (before their official release) at his house when he still lived in LA was always fun - popcorn included.

He left an indelible stamp on the martial arts landscape, sure - but that’s not how I remember him. I remember his generosity with people - giving away his cap and T-shirt to a couple of kids who accidentally walked into the Machado mat, where I was teaching him a private once. That’s who he was to me: loving, generous, a beautiful human being.

They say we die twice - once on the day of our passing, and the second time when people stop uttering our name. May he never die completely. I trust this will be the case.
