Bringing elite sport, real rehab, and biomechanics together at VU 🔬⚽️

Our 2nd‑year Physio cohort immersed themselves in four Biomechanics Lab sessions at our Footscray Park campuses, where data, clinical reasoning, and high‑performance sport meet.

Huge thanks to Cody Weightman and De Berry from the Western Bulldogs for sharing the real stories behind rehab, setbacks, and return‑to‑play 🐶

Our March Alumni Spotlight shines on Sergei Evglevski; VU graduate, pistol shooter, and proud dual Olympian 🔫

Growing up in a true pistol‑shooting family (with his mum competing at six Olympic Games and his dad serving as the Australian Olympic Team gunsmith) Sergei was destined for the range. He made his own mark with Olympic selection for Tokyo 2020, becoming the seventh consecutive family member to compete at the Games, followed by his appearance at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

A Commonwealth Games silver medallist in the 25m rapid fire pistol, Sergei has represented Australia with grit and precision on the world stage.

Off the range, he graduated from VU in 2020 with a Bachelor of Business and now works in recruitment. He is also still giving back to the VU Elite Sport & Performer Program through guest talks and support for our next generation of athletes 💙

Are you a powerlifting or weightlifting athlete? 🏋️‍♀️

is researching how the menstrual cycle influences strength performance, neuromuscular function, and wellbeing across different cycle phases and we’re looking for participants!

To take part, you must:
• Be female, 18–45 years old
• Have competed in your respective sport
• Not be using hormonal contraception
• Be able to back squat 1.5× bodyweight

Participation includes:
• Menstrual cycle tracking
• 12 testing sessions across 2 consecutive cycles
— 6 lab sessions at VU Footscray Park
— 6 gym sessions at your own training facility

Testing will involve:
• Intake form + Reproductive Status Questionnaire
• Venepuncture blood draws
• At‑home ovulation testing
• Cycle + wellbeing tracking app
• 1RM back squat + force‑velocity testing
• Isometric mid‑thigh pull
• Dynamometry + HDEMG
• Qualitative interviews

Reminder that the Victorian International Student Sport Festival is happening next Saturday 4 April at the Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre!

Last year welcomed 470 international students from 26 nationalities, representing 12 UniSport member institutes (and we’re ready to go even bigger in 2026)!

Our Intensive Swimming Program is back these April school holidays! 🏊‍♀️

Children take part in a 30‑minute class every day, Monday to Friday, giving them the chance to build confidence and progress their skills quickly through continual learning.

We’re also offering 30‑minute private lessons for one‑on‑one support and personalised development.

A huge congratulations to VU Elite Sport & Performer Program alumna Emily on joining the Athletes’ Department at the International Olympic Committee! The perfect next step toward her dream of shaping international sport development and Olympic legacy planning (especially on the road to Brisbane 2032).

A dual Olympian, Emily represented Australia at the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and was the flag bearer at the 2017 FINA World Championships.

At VU, she excelled both in and out of the pool. She graduated her Diploma of Sport Development with straight HDs, progressing into a Bachelor of Sport & Recreation Management, and receiving the Emerging Elite Sport Scholarship, Academic & Sporting Excellence Award, and Full Blue Award. She even taught the next generation as a swim teacher at the VU Aquatic & Fitness Centre 💙

Exciting news! We’re finally updating the Level 0 male and female change rooms at the VU Aquatic & Fitness Centre on the Footscray Park Campus. Yes, we’ve heard your feedback 😂

These spaces will be closed for the foreseeable future while works take place. In the meantime, we encourage all users to utilise the Level 00 change rooms on the pool deck.

We can’t wait to welcome everyone back to a fresh, modern and improved space. Keep an eye on our socials for reopening updates!
