🏆 Celebrating VU Impact Legend Rohenna (Ro) Young!

Congratulations to former VU Sport staff member and Victoria University Alumni Ro Young, who received a VU Impact Legend Award in the A Thriving Place to Study and Work category at last night’s Project 110 Gala.

With an impressive football career, Ro coached both Victoria University and the Darebin Falcons to premierships, earned a Full Blue from VU and was named a life member of the VWFL, which named its Leading Goal Kicker award in her honour.

Today, Ro continues to make a lasting impact at VU as Director of the thrive* program, which she founded in 2023. What began as a one-month pilot has grown into a whole-of-university initiative, recording more than 130,000 interactions and engaging at least 11,000 students and staff through inclusive wellbeing activities.

From yoga and lunchtime dance parties to creative workshops and social connection, thrive* helps create a welcoming university community where everyone can participate, connect and feel a sense of belonging.

The program’s impact has also received international recognition, earning a QS Worldwide Silver Medal, alongside other accolades for its innovative approach to wellbeing.

Ro’s journey reflects an enduring commitment to sport, wellbeing and building a thriving Victoria University Melbourne community 💙

We’re proud to congratulate Victoria University Alumni Dr Shane Gould on receiving the inaugural Victoria University Melbourne Impact Legend Award – Learning-centred for life at the Project 110 Gala tonight 🏊‍♀️

One of Australia’s greatest swimmers, Shane made history at the 1972 Munich Olympics, winning three gold medals while setting world records in each of her gold-medal events.

But Shane’s pursuit of excellence didn’t stop at the pool. More than four decades after her Olympic success, she returned to study and completed a PhD at Victoria University, exploring the cultural significance of swimming in Australia.

Her research drew on extensive travel across the country and conversations with Australians about their experiences in and around water. It challenged traditional ideas about Australia’s relationship with swimming and explored opportunities to build stronger swimming cultures, encourage creative play in water and improve water safety.

Shane chose VU because of its focus on sport and recreational culture beyond simply performance and participation — making her PhD a natural extension of her lifelong connection to swimming.

From Olympic champion to researcher, mentor and lifelong learner, Shane continues to use her experiences to question, explore and create meaningful impact.

Her story is a wonderful reflection of what Project 110 is all about: celebrating our past, recognising the impact of our people and looking towards the possibilities ahead.

Australia’s most popular kids’ soccer program is now running at the VU Aquatic & Fitness Centre in Footscray. Designed for children aged 2.5 - 11 years, Soccajoeys helps build confidence, coordination, communication skills and a love of sport in a fun, inclusive and non-competitive environment.

September Alumni Spotlight ✨

This month we’re featuring Hayley Silvester, who only just wrapped up her studies at Victoria University earlier this year!

Hayley represents Australia in bobsleigh, competing on the IBSF World Cup and Europe Cup circuits. Earlier this year, she achieved a lifelong dream by representing Australia at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games! Now, with one Olympic campaign under her belt, she’s already setting her sights on the next one and working towards selection for the 2030 Winter Olympics ❄️

As if that wasn’t enough, Hayley recently completed her Bachelor of Education at VU with a High Distinction average, all while balancing the demands of elite sport.

We’re so proud of everything Hayley has achieved and can’t wait to see what comes next ☃️

From VU student to CEO 🏉

Simon Garlick studied his Master of Business Administration at Victoria University Melbourne while playing over 100 AFL games for the Western Bulldogs. Since then, he’s gone on to become a Western Bulldogs Director, Western Bulldogs CEO, and now CEO of the Fremantle Football Club. Not a bad career journey! 🙌
