PIHQ Para Ice Hockey has come to Australia! Opportunities to participate in team sports for people with disabilities are very limited.

It all started with a man on a mission to bring Para Ice Hockey Qld - the exciting, fast, team sport played on ice to Australia. A team sport is where skills like teamwork, goal-setting, pursuit of excellence and other behaviours necessary for success in the workplace are developed. Para Ice Hockey is one such sport. There is a sense of camaraderie, a sense of belonging and accomplishment that c

omes from being part of a team. Social, physical and mental health benefits are equally or more important as self-esteem, social isolation, sense of well-being, are already lower than the general able-bodied population. It is important to reduce the risks of developing secondary conditions such as fatigue, obesity, diabetes, some cancers. When people with newly acquired disabilities are discharged from hospital with their wheelchair or prosthesis, their rehab is just beginning. Sport can be a vital part of this process. It can see an improvement in mood, reduction of anxiety, feelings of increased self-worth, better body image. New friendships, countering stigmatization, health improvements, reduced risk of chronic health conditions are all added benefits. Para Ice Hockey Queensland is the Qld State body that serves to provide a positive experience for athletes of all ages and abilities. On top of providing programs for recreational participation, we also strive to provide a pathway for our players to compete at an International level.

Yesterday we started off with a warm up of "steal a cone", which got the competitive juices flowing, before some shooting and 3-on-2 drills.

This week also marks Spina Bifida Awareness Week in Australia, we have a number of players with the condition, and acknowledge the efforts and achievements of those living with it.

Just a reminder that next week will be our last session for Term 3 for anyone who wants to come and learn to play our sport, before game day for our experienced players on September 16th, we'd love to see you come and cheer them all on.

A small group yesterday, and we were put through our paces, running 3-on-2 drills for most of the session, giving Penny a chance to practise her newfound goalie skills.

We also held our AGM after the session, where we elected the following:

President: Ben Stadtmiller
Vice-President: Kyle Haslam
Treasurer: Barry Grant
Secretary: Ann Grant

We congratulate Kyle on his new role, and thank outgoing VP Tony Doevendans for his efforts, Tony will continue on as a general board member.

There are two more general sessions, where everyone is welcome to come along and have a go, finishing Term 3 with a game day on September 16th.

Last week, we were lucky to have Benjamin Samuels come along and take photos during the Jarred Liddicoat Memorial Game. We will feature some of his photos over the coming weeks.

Today we held our annual Jarred Liddicoat Memorial Game to honour our teammate and brother on what would have been his 38th birthday. Despite the low turnout, the match was hard-fought, and we were all pretty cooked by the end.

The game was played in the right spirit, with the result a 1-1 draw, Kyle opened the scoring for the Blue team with an absolute bullet from an acute angle, with Matt equalising for the Orange team late.

We thank Christie-Lee for bringing cupcakes for us to share after the match, Matt for bringing a cake, Benjamin for his photography during the match, and especially Jarred's sister Annelise for coming along.

A huge thank you to our support crew in the stands for their cheering during the game (or did they just want to sit where it was warm?)

Next week, we are back for anyone wanting to have a go at our sport.

This is what Abilitv is all about. Giving our team real opportunities to get out in the field, report stories, interview people and get hands-on with the action.
And in this Para Ice Hockey story with PIHQ, we mean really hands-on … including getting out on the ice!

Thanks to Brandon, Jess and the crew for their story on us, we really enjoyed being part of the program. Well done also to Brandon for getting out on the ice with us, and Matt for giving him some tips, we hope Brandon enjoyed himself.

Well done to Ben, Kyle, Andrew and Susan for their insights into the sport. We hope that it has encouraged some of you to come and join us on the ice one day.

Just a reminder that next Wednesday, August 19th, is the annual Jarred Liddicoat Memorial Game, featuring our experienced players, all welcome to come and cheer the players on.
