Flynn competed at his first APL Nationals back in September.

He went 9/9 and got the total record for his age category.

Best lifts of the day:
Squat: 175kg (+5kg)
Bench: 122.5kg (+12.5kg)
Deadlift: 212.5kg (+5kg)

It all started with a Strength Discovery Session.

The first 5kg we added at comp in March. The second 5kg came at Nationals.

We found a rhythm that worked.

On her main bench day we did a normal competition bench. On her second bench day we did larsen press.

Combined with strategic jumps using micro plates, she consistently made progress.

The caveat: she did the same program structure the whole time.

And she stuck to the plan. No changes. No just trying things.

She rinsed and repeated the boring stuff.

The top three reasons why we see people stall on self written programs.

1. Frequency is too much or not enough. Either they can’t recover or they aren’t getting enough work to progress.

2. Variations are non-existent or they aren’t doing the right ones. The right variations are essential to work through issues.

3. Poor accessory selection. Self written programs have accessories thrown in that ‘feel right.’ There is no purpose behind them.

What are you missing from your self written program?

Here is an updated bite sized break down for each federation in Australia.

6 weeks out from his first Nationals, Dan started cutting depth.

There are two things that affected squat depth towards the end of the prep: nerves and bodyweight.

As the weight got heavier, Dan naturally was more nervous, rushed, and the result was a shallow squat.

Dan also started his prep about one kilogram over his weight class. As the prep went on he dropped some weight but ended up getting lighter than he needed. He went from 83.5 roughly to 80.8.

On the day though, squats turned up. We only hit 137.5kg in prep and ended up hitting 152.5kg on the day.

The key was keeping squats towards the end of prep and the opener conservative.

We needed to stack some good reps to re-build the confidence around depth. And he had to go into the first lift of the day feeling good, not afraid.

Another big takeaway is making sure that he is already in his weight class before prep starts. Then monitoring body weight so that it doesn’t drop too much as he moves into his heaviest weeks of training.

Every competition is a data point. It helps you to refine the strategy over time. This is one of the benefits of being with a coach long term.

GLP-1’s do not have to automatically mean muscle mass loss.

It’s normal to expect a drop in the beginning as calorie reduction is quick.

This does not mean you have to accept a continuous loss.

After putting an emphasis on protein intake above everything else, we saw lean body mass stabilise AND start increasing again.

Alice also had that training to support muscle retention, even hitting a squat triple PB.

If you’re using a GLP-1 and still want to get stronger, we can help.

It doesn’t matter how much you can actually lift. Whether you deadlift 50kg or 250kg. We take you seriously at exactly the level you are at.
