Vale Charlie Martin
The Ararat Harness Racing Club would like to pay tribute to Charlie Martin, whose dedication and commitment to our club played an important role in shaping its history.
Charlie gave an incredible 26 years of service as a committee member from 1962, including 10 years as President and a further six years as Vice President. He was part of the committee during the significant transition from racing at Alexandra Oval to the club's current home, helping guide the club through an important chapter in its history.
Harness racing was a passion for Charlie, who enjoyed success as an owner with horses including Barkly Star, a seven-time winner, and Troopship, who won on ten occasions, both prepared by Ian Shalders.
Outside of racing, Charlie was well known throughout Ararat as the owner of his local butcher's shop. After his time with the Ararat Harness Racing Club, he continued giving back to the local racing industry through his involvement with the Ararat Racing Club committee.
Although we are saddened that we were unable to acknowledge Charlie's passing at the time, it is important to recognise the lasting contribution he made to our club and to the wider racing community. His years of service, leadership and passion for harness racing will always be remembered.
On behalf of everyone at the Ararat Harness Racing Club, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Charlie's family and friends.
Rest in peace, Charlie, and thank you for everything you gave to our club.
