Our brains by nature are designed to scan for threats, see what is lacking. This is part of our wiring. Some of us have this really wired in hard, even in the face of good things we are waiting for the drop, noticing the imperfections… especially in ourselves.

Fortunately thanks to the power of neuroplasticity we can shape these automatic patterns but it needs to be intentional, especially at the start ❤️

Appreciation, kindness and interest are such under valued daily practices in a relationship but in truth they give us the most bang for our buck.

We often get hooked on “quality time” and “date nights”…. But the simple things add up and strengthen our connection.

Greeting our partner when they arrive home, remembering how used to reconnect when you first met… what does it look like now? Do your actions demonstrate you are happy to see them?

Thanking them, we all contribute, things need to get done but isn’t it nice to hear thank you? Do you like it when you are acknowledged and thanked at work? You are doing your job and getting paid… but how good does the acknowledgment feel?

Noticing something positive, our lens can be calibrated to see the flaws, the lack - we have to consciously take stock and recognise the good, then voice it.

Appreciating them being in your life. If they were gone tomorrow, gravely ill, imagine to hole left in your heart. Would you be thinking of the little annoyances? Think of the gift that is them, imperfect as we are all.

These small words and moments flow often freely when we are first dating. But soon get lost in the bustle of life.

Positivity grows, it only takes one of you to start

A few months ago a couple came to me in crisis, they had planned on getting married but were fighting. They were stuck in cycles of nagging, defensiveness and resentment.

Tonight they are doing so well and are are excited to be getting married in 2 weeks time. They feel like a team, they communicate respectfully and effectively. Most importantly they have skills and the desire to repair when they make mistakes or get off track ❤️
