ZIFA Mashonaland West Division 2A: Tembo Free Kick Sinks Crocodile FC at Nyabira
Chinhoyi Stars F.C. claimed bragging rights and three vital points in the ZIFA Mashonaland West Division 2A after edging hosts Crocodile FC 1-0 at Nyabira Country Club on Saturday.
The visitors wasted no time stamping their intent. Just 19 minutes in, Chinhoyi Stars won a free kick 22 yards from goal after a clumsy foul on their winger. Omega Tembo stood over the dead ball and delivered. His left-footed strike whipped over the wall, dipped late, and nestled in the top right corner past a diving Crocodile FC keeper. The away bench erupted — 1-0.
That early blow forced Crocodile FC to chase the game. The home side responded with long spells of possession and forced two corners before halftime, but the Stars’ backline stayed compact. Centre-back pairing S Maluwenje and F Kwaramba cleared everything aerial, while keeper Chriswell Chikuse was alert to smother a low drive in the 34th minute.
Second half saw Crocodile FC push higher. Their No.14 found pockets between the lines and tested Chikuse with a curling effort in the 57th minute, but the Stars shot-stopper tipped it around the post. Chinhoyi Stars nearly doubled the lead on the break in the 71st when striker Michael Svisva was put through, only to drag his shot wide with just the keeper to beat.
Crocodile FC huffed and puffed in the closing stages. A 89th-minute scramble in the box saw a goalmouth clearance from Stars defender Takudzwa July, and that proved to be the last real chance. Five minutes of stoppage time came and went with Chinhoyi Stars managing the game well to see out the 1-0 win.
The result lifts Chinhoyi Stars up the Division 2A log, while Crocodile FC will feel they let points slip at home. For Omega Tembo, his 19th-minute set piece was enough to decide a tight match at Nyabira Country Club.
