Inspired by the colourful carnivals of the Caribbean and the new boom in African pop music, Zoca is a highly effective and exhilarating workout aimed at not only improving strength, muscle tone and endurance but confidence and body image as well. Founded in 2012 by dancer and choreographer Namaala Liebenthal, Zoca® is a unique new take on dance fitness that has quickly taken Southern Africa b
y storm. Inspired by the colourful carnivals of the Caribbean and the new boom in African pop music, Zoca brings together these two rich cultures to create a highly effective and exhilarating workout aimed at not only improving strength, muscle tone and endurance but confidence and body image as well. Zoca goes beyond other forms of dance fitness by setting a combination of challenging and fun choreography to music that travels from the streets of Trinidad & Tobago to the nightclubs of Zambia. The mantra sums Zoca up in three simple phrases: “Shake it up, shake it out, and shake it off,” which is to say, “dare to do something different today, shake the stress and tension out through a high-energy class, and ultimately shake it [the weight] off.” Unlike any other fitness class, Zoca instructors traipse through local nightclubs and street performances for their inspiration bringing together a truly diverse mix of sounds and styles. Thanks to an ever-evolving stream of fresh music and moves, class-goers or Zocanista™ as they’ve come to be known, leave every class feeling liberated, rejuvenated and eager for more.
