emory regarding your commitment to the Organization. The purpose of this document is to give you a brief background of Nomads Organization and to inform prospective Nomads of what is expected of them if they are inducted as members of this club which has rich traditions and values. Nomads Creed:
The Nomads creed is taken from the writings of John Donne
‘’No man is an island entire of itself;
Every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind;
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee". The Nomads badge contains a bell, symbolizing the remembrance of the others, crossed by a
golf club, indicating our service to the game of golf. Formation of Nomads:
Shortly after World War II Michael Florance formed the New Union Merchant Industrial Corporation (NUMIC) Social and Sporting Club centered in Johannesburg. When NUMIC disbanded, the golfing members no longer having a regular monthly game, decided to form a new golfing society whereby they could continue to enjoy one another’s fellowship and all funds raised donated to the National War Fund. The reputed founder of Nomads was Mike Florence who said;
“There is room in this game for some kind of association or club for business and professional men to come together in a closely planned and integrated programmes of golf, with all games inter-related and offering a continuing thread of interest and that out of this activity could arise some tangible benefit of two very proper causes, to the game of golf itself and to those less fortunate than ourselves”.
• These intrepid ex- ‘’Nomad’’ golfers, together with a few other golfers who indicated their interest and willingness to join, formed the nucleus of the club. As the club, did not have a course of its own, it was decided that games would be played at different courses monthly, thus leading a nomadic existence as a club? Hence the name ‘’Nomads Golf Club’’ was agreed upon.
