What the Athletes said:
Jones Sikaona "Machine 42"
"My first 1500M race was a bit tough,I didn't know the pace so i decided to go out hard at first to give myself a chance to finish in the top 3 because I like front running, I just wanted to be on the podium. In the 800M final, I decided to stick to my strategy, the Zimbabwean went out hard but my plan was to do 55 seconds on the first 400M which I did. I started pushing on the last 300M, I know my strength, I know where I kick. Today was about executing the race the way I have been training & I did that perfectly. Now my focus is on a new personal best."
Michael Miti
"It was amazing honestly, I was competing with some of the best high jumpers in Southern Africa, I'm grateful to have had an opportunity to represent Zambia on an international scale. I was aiming for 2 meters, but now I know I need to put in more effort because now I know I can place top among other athletes. This bronze has motivated me, made me more hungry to achieve that goal."
Vein Yen Siambelele
"The race was ok, it was a challenge because it was too windy, so i couldn't come out with a new personal best. It was my first international competition, naturally I was scared but I tried to overcome the nerves. My target now is to do better at international level than I have done in this Championship. "
Coach Mike Musanda
"On Individual performances, they all did well. 6/7 did their new personal bests. Konga came back very strong in the 200M after missing out on the 100M final, it shows a character of a determined athlete.
Ruth was consistent despite reducing time in the 100M compared to that of the semifinals. Very minimal part to work on mentally.
The new kid Micheal Miti's bronze medal was unexpected.only discovered this year & in less than 6 months he wins an international medal, the 16 year old is destined for greatness.
From Namwala, discovered during the Yonah Mwale Championship & in less than 1 year he wins a gold & a silver! I told him what to do & Vein stuck to that, he implemented the instructions on the track.
That shows that the athlete has greater chances of improvement. Otherwise all the Athletes put up great performances, 7 athletes, 7 medals!"
