Leigh and Winston have both settled into the HOT weather in Antwerp and have been sluuurping away at cuppings, connecting with the wider team, visiting cafes and roasteries for some R&D, and clocking km’s on the bike (might have to start a CEDAR cycle after this trip 🚲😅) !

Today they got to cup coffees from of GREEN HILLS COFFEE 🪴SPECIALTY COFFEE with the Top Of The Crop & 32Cape team. Having the producer in the room while cupping added a refined connection to the cup experience and the guys gained insights and context cupping fly coffees still in parchment (pergamino as they’ve learned) 🧐

Notable mention goes to our new friend Oliver from Andy Roasters for the great service and coffee this morning 👊🏽☕️

Yebo yes, it’s that time of the year! Festive in July ⛄☕

Due to popular demand (and mid year snow in JHB a few years back!) we now release our infamous Festive Blend in July and December!

This Festive Blend gives us the opportunity to play and blend coffees that are typically used as single origin to create “”a blend that doesn’t taste like a blend”” where the whole is greater that the sum of it’s parts 💪🏼

Cedar Fives is now going INTERNATIONAL 🌍 🤩

For the month of June our monthly 5 aside will be held in Antwerp, Belgium next week and co-hosted with our good friends and partners Top Of The Crop!

Our intention with this program has always been about more than just a kick around with some friends once a month, it’s been about fostering connection and building community outside the roastery and the cafe space with a common language - FOOTBALL ⚽

Leigh and Winston will be attending in Brussels next week and we thought it would be fitting, given that it’s FIFA World Cup, to host a game!

Stiek uit if you are around and share it with your friends if not. We already have some Bafana representatives and a few Belgians (of all ages) signed up. Rumour has it there might be a Swede joining and potentially a couple of Brazilians and Colombians 🇿🇦🇧🇪🇸🇪🇨🇴🇧🇷

A slower day, a warm coffee, and a bit of time to chat ☕

Winter has a way of changing the pace around the store. People stay a little longer, coffees get a little bigger, and conversations tend to drift beyond “just the usual.”

No complaints from our side 🙂

KENYA THUNGURI AB WASHED 🇰🇪

Here is your Untitled 76 and YES, fresh crop Kenya has arrived (lekker early hey!) 🤩🥳

This is our first of 3 Kenyans lots bought from kamavindicoffee. Hee Ye’s response to this when cupping earlier this week was, “”Wow, this tastes like a classic Kenyan coffee!”” 🔥

This one is produced by small-scale farmers delivering to the Thunguri Factory, part of the Rumukia Co-operative Society in Nyeri. The lot is made up of the classic SL28, SL24 and Batian varietal combo and the fruit goes through the (anything but) conventional washed process.

Sound simple? In some ways yes. But Hee Ye’s response to tastning this coffee has a lot of truth and depth to it! There is no rare varietal here or experimental process yet this coffee is as interesting and expressive as any of the other coffees on our current list. Try it for yourself, you’ll see 🙂

We like doing things with a lot of intention ☕

Including making our coffee… A hand-brewed filter isn’t the quickest way to make a coffee, but that’s never really been the goal.

It’s a chance to slow down, pay attention, and get a little closer to what’s in the cup. The sweetness, the acidity, the flavours that make one coffee taste completely different from the next.

A few extra minutes for a much more interesting cup feels like a fair trade to us 🙂
