I love Camping - SA I Love Camping SA was founded in June of 2011 follows the journey of a family of 5, living in Cape Town South Africa as they document their love for camping.

The Page showcases our camping adventure from the Wildest of Camping sites to the most commercial and everything in-between. Through our adventure we look for places that the kids enjoy, my wife loves and that I enjoy, so no camping site is ever the same. We also review camping gadgets that we find along the way and manufacture some of our own that you just wont find in your local camping store. T

The next stage of our journey was to the campsite we were most excited about trying out... Something truly unique and special Erica Hills.

We decided to have a spot of breakfast before our drive and headed over to île de païn on Thesen Island, being season it was incredibly by and we waited around 30 minutes for a seat. Once we sat down we had a great breakfast, including some good coffee, my favourites a Pastei de Nata and various other Breakfast items.

We made our way towards Plettenberg Bay and followed the easy directions to reach the campsite which is about 15km outside of Plett. The Campsite is accessible via normal vehicles using the logging roads on the 750ha Pine Plantation. Your campsite is a clearing on the farm, towered over by 3 massive Pine Trees that provide shade throughout the day.

The owner was incredibly attentive during our visit and ensured we had a constant supply of Black Wattle wood, while the Pine Cones from the trees made great kindling to start the fire in the Fire Pit on site.

If you are looking for a spot to get away from everything and have nothing but time to just relax and do basically nothing, this is the spot for you. There is nothing to distract you from relaxing, other than yourself.

There is a small swimming hole available, which is a short walk from the campsite and would come in handy on the hot summer days. The farm has a number of roads available for mountain cycling, trail running or just taking a walk.

We spent the 2 days here experimenting with some camping recipes, catching up on naps, reading, walking the farm roads and just recharging our batteries.

Erica Hills really is a small piece of heaven and a campsite that if you are into this type of camping, needs to be on your bucket list. This has very quickly risen to one of my favorite spots and was by far the highlight of our Tour.

As promised, here is a quick review of in Knysana....

The Woodbourne Resort is located just at The Heads, about 5km from the main town of Knysna, making it perfectly positioned for those wanting to explore the lagoon and the famous Knysna Heads.

The campsite offers a beautiful park-like setting with a variety of plots that are ] well-maintained by the Duthie family. The layout is nestled between the forest and the mountains, and being only 500 meters from a safe tidal lagoon beach, it really feels like nature is knocking on your door.

Some of the campsites are well-grassed and offer shade thanks to the mature trees that line the resort. These trees are also home to birdlife, including the Knysna Loerie and resident owls.

The facilities include neat ablution blocks, a swimming pool and jungle gym area, which are great for keeping the kids entertained. Each site comes with its own braai place and water points and power outlets are also close by.

The proximity to the Outeniqua Mountains means there are plenty of opportunities for cycling and exploring the natural beauty of the Garden Route right from your campsite.

We particularly enjoy a Saturday morning at the Sedgefield Market but ger there early as it gets very busy, especially over the holidays. My suggestions are to visit the Butcher who is located in the Wild Oats section for delicious biltong and the guys at Maillard Baking Co for their Chorizo bread sticks.

It must be noted that the campsite does have some reside in Knysna.... does mean that some campers had the joys of Bat droppings to deal with on their tents.

The campsite is also in very close proximity to well known restaurants such as Piza e Vino, we decided to pop in at the East Head Cafe and enjoyed some amazing seafood with the best views of The Heads.

The second part of our overlanding tour took a bit of a surprise turn, but more on that a bit later…

We headed out from Oudtshoorn and made a quick stop for some much needed caffeine and bite to eat before making our way to George.

We arrived in George with a plan to stock up for the rest of the tour, it’s incredible just how big George has become and you can literally find anything you need.

Fridge stocked, we then headed to the mall for the rest of the supplies and ensured we were stocked for the next 9 days of camping. This also happened to be our anniversary, so we secured some Prawns which were going to be done on the fire to celebrate the day.

We then made off to what was supposed to be our next campsite, a totally off-grid, unmarked spot that we found online, which is located around the Wilderness area.

Now it must be noted that the owner had warned us of the loose sand on the route to the campsite; he had failed to mention the steep descent into the site, as well as the massive ruts in the loose sand that would have made getting any momentum required to get back uphill impossible.

Needless to say with my 20” Highway tyres, I wasnt confident in making it back up to the road from the campsite and after discussions with the owner, we decided to find another spot for the next few days.

After some frantic phoning around, we managed to get space at Woodbourne Resort on the Knysna Heads, and I will do a full review of the campsite tomorrow.

On route to the campsite, we decided to pop in at Cafe Mario for a Pizza as we had been told by our friends who joined us that it was a place not to be missed. They were 100% correct and we had an awesome Pizza before heading off to Woodbourne and setting up camp.

This is one of the reasons we are really enjoying our Overlanding, as you have a lot more freedom to just stop, park and enjoy the towns you visit, you seem to get to enjoy the journey a bit more….

Over the festive period we went on a 10 day overlanding tour with close friends of ours from .

I am going to spend the next few days taking you through this awesome adventure and share with you some campsites that we visited…

The first day of our tour started off very early with a 5am meetup on the N1 with our first stop being Maatjiesfontein, just off the N1 around 2hrs or so from Cape Town.

The town itself has some great little shops, but the highlight must be the incredibly well kept museum that you can access and walk through, with some of the most extensive and well kept artifacts from the past that I have seen.

We then headed further on the N1 before turning off and reaching our second stop, Prince Albert. This was another awesome town with lots of little cafe’s and shops for us to browse. We ended up having some coffee and cake at a local spot and also managed to get some meat and biltong from the local butcher.

The next stop was the main reason for the long detour, as we headed through the Swartberg Pass to Oudtshoorn. My wife isn't the biggest fan of heights, and when there is a sharp drop on the other side, this makes it even worse, but she handled it well.

The pass was beautiful and an incredible showcase of the power of nature that formed these mountains and created the incredible shapes, colors and textures you see on display.

We then made it to our campsite for the night, OppiDam , which we absolutely love and have featured a number of times on this page.

The next 2 days were spent enjoying the lush greenery on the campsite and in particular the beautiful pool which has recently been resurfaced and looks spectacular.

Being new to Overlanding, we are finding ourselves being a lot more appreciative of the journey to camp, rather than rushing from site to site due to the energy required to take down and setup camp when you are in a caravan etc…

This past weekend we joined the Western Cape Offroad Camping Club for their January club camp, which was held at the newly formed Wolwehok campsite which is located on the .

The campsite is located just off the N1, on the old Du Toitskloof Pass road in Paarl, so it’s well within an hour from most parts of Cape Town.

There are currently 12 plots on the campsite, with 1-10 running along a stream that runs through the campsite, while plots 11 and 12 are in the newer section and slightly away from the main campsite.

All of the campsites are grassed, with most of them having shade from the trees that line the stream. The stream that runs alongside the campsite has been dammed in some areas to create small pools in which you can cooldown on the hot summer days.

It’s important to note that the campsite is Offgrid, so no electricity is available on the campsite, however running water and mobile braai’s are available.

The ablutions are very modern and neat, with 3 Full Bathrooms that include a flush toilet, shower and basin, there is also a communal washing up area as well as a cold outdoor shower and urinal for the Men on the back of the ablution block.

The campsite has a few hiking trails which lead you in the Middagberg Mountains and can be explored while camping on the Farm.

Pets are allowed but only with prior arrangement with the farm management. Wood can be purchased but you need to let the owners know before the time so that they can deliver it for you.

Reception on the Campsite was sporadic, however does improve closer to the ablutions and seems to come and go depending on where you are on the plots.

Overall this is a great new addition to the Cape Town camping scene and makes the perfect quick weekend breakaway…. We will be back for sure.

Our second stop on our recent trip was to just outside of Montagu.

We have been to the campsite before, however this was during the drought and as a result at the time there was very little water.

We visited the campsite as some friends of ours were spending a long stay on the campsite and we wanted to spend a few days with them.

The campsite was very busy with lots of campers making use of the facilities. We secured 2 plots by the small dam and had ample shade and grass on our plots.

Overall the condition of the campsite is decent, however I think the facilities were struggling to deal with the sheer number of campers using the ablutions and pools.

Temperatures were well into the high 30’s bordering on 40’s so the 2 fairly small cold water pools were constantly full and as a result didn’t get much chance to recover overnight in terms of water quality.

The campsite also has 2 warm water pool, one for kids and one for adults, I did see that they were popular however I couldn’t imagine getting in during the extensive heat we had during our stay.

The campsite sells wood, ice and a few cool drinks, ice cream and chips etc, while there is also 2 fully stocked bars on site offering takeaways such as Pizzas and Burgers etc.

Overall the stay was pleasant, however I do think they need to pay some attention to the pools as they simply didn’t cope during the stay.

There is a 3rd cold water pool (pictured) which is on the chalet side of the campsite which seems to be in better shape, however is a bit of a walk from the campsite.

Highlight of the few days on camp was the farms resident owl who came to pay our neighbours a visit and posed for a few photos for us 😊

As always we try and provide a balanced view of campsites and while we enjoyed the stay with the people we camped with etc, the facilities need to be looked after for us to be able to recommend the campsite more regularly.

Have you been to Doringlaagte recently and would you recommend it ?

This year we have broken our Holiday into 2 separate ones, the first was a 7 Day trip with our 2 teenage boys and the last bit will be a 11 Day Overlanding tour.

The first stop was which is located between Suurbrak and Heidelberg on a working Dairy farm. Many of you would recognise this campsite as it’s honestly one of my favourites, firmly in the top 3.

I love this campsite because of its peaceful and tranquil nature, being offgrid and off the beaten track, it’s never dull and the owners even make sure never to book more than 50% of what I feel the campsite could take.

We spent Christmas under the mighty oak trees with some amazing friends, enjoying the surroundings with no distractions.

If you looking for a place to lose contact with the outside world and just be disconnected for a few days then this is the place.

The owners will bring, wood, ice and fresh milk from their cows around 2-3 times daily if you order via the “bookie” at the ablution, which were well kept and clean throughout our stay.

Unfortunately our stay didnt have the greatest weather, raining a few times as well as mostly being overcast, so our solar setup was tested to the max, however the rain was much needed for the farmers in the area so it brought some welcome relive for them 🙏

This past weekend we spent the long weekend at Noah Farm Campsite just outside Wolesley.

Anyone who has followed this page knows that Noah is one of my favourites, and this weekend sealed its place on top of my list of campsites.

We got to camp on one of the 2 new Campsites that they have opened to the public this year, namely Campsite 8.

It’s the lowest down on the mountain of all the campsites but arguably it has one of the best views as you sit in the pine tree forest which adorns the lower section of the farm.

The campsite is well grassed and has the best campsite ablution without any doubt. There is also an indoor area if the weather turns like it did for us on Friday, with a built in Braai .

The campsite is offgrid, but they do now offer some portable power solutions that you can rent from them if you arrange it ahead of time.

One of the reasons why I personally love the campsite is that each site is private as well as pet friendly, so my 2 Golden Retrievers could explore and roam to their heats content.

This weekend we also made use of some of the farms marked trails, allowing us to explore some parts of the farm we haven’t seen before.

The Farm does also sell Wood and Ice, if order each morning before 10:00 and then is delivered to your campsite later in the day.

This weekend we also made use of the “HotTub” to cool ourselves down in the extreme heat we had on Sunday and Monday.

It was a beautiful weekend and the campsites are truly special, the attention to detail that went into each element of the campsite is a reflection of how much they value your camping experience.

We are already planning our next visit to see how Campsite 7 feels, the plan is to camp on every site at least once, so far we have done 4 of the 8 sites 😎

Just be warned you will need a high ground clearance vehicle to access the campsite, a 4x4 would be recommended but not an absolute requirement.

Day 6: Best Duty Supa Potjie

🍲 The Clean-Up Cheat Code! 🌟 We all love a good potjie, but nobody loves scrubbing a sooty, black pot with limited campsite water. That’s why Day 6 is dedicated to the ultimate game-changer: the Supa Potjie (Enamel Coated)! I've been using mine for five years now, and honestly, it still looks like it came straight out of the box, it's in perfect condition!

The secret sauce here is the enamel coating. It means cleaning is an absolute breeze; no more scrubbing for hours trying to remove burnt-on food or fire grime. A quick wipe, and you're done! Plus, this model comes complete with its own carry bag, which is a non-negotiable for keeping your pot in pristine shape (and preventing soot from coating the rest of your gear in the bakkie). It's the gift that keeps on giving: delicious meals and zero cleaning fuss.

Stop giving the gift of elbow grease! The Supa Potjie (7.8L with Enamel and Bag) is currently on special for just R1,699.00 (normally R2,550)! You can find the full Best Duty range online and at quality outdoor and specialized camping stores across South Africa!
