The past four days have been both overwhelming and interesting, as we have been extremely busy on the Breederiver assisting our visitors on both sides of the river. To my knowledge it is the first time ever that the Witsand and Infanta businesses and boat charter companies have worked in tandem like this. We had between 3 to 5 fishing charter boats going out on the river every day collecting 28 fisherman in Witsand and Infanta in a well coordinated way. Nature did not help the effort at all, with the bait sandbanks not opening at low tide and the fresh water streaming down the river and causing muddy brown almost fresh water. We were therefore restricted to fish only from Skuitbaai to just before Karoolskraal. The events were coordinated by Rens&Co fishing Witsand and the group organizers David and Prof Dheda. The accommodation facilities also played a big role with on the Infanta side Mudlark Lodge and Southwinds and on the Witsand side the Breede River Lodge. The skippers involved were Mark Whoof, Thys Carstens, Hennie Garlick, Pete, Victor Kateksa, Pete Schifferling and Rens Bindeman. In the end a good amount of fish of all sizes were caught that included some kob, grunter, steenbras, stumpnoses and lots and lots of barber all caught on bait. Only the odd fish was kept apparently for Hillary to make some very tasty fish cakes and all the others were safely released. The competition was rife and many beers were downed in the process. The fisherman were moved around the different boats, in order to make it more interesting for them and time was also spent to educate them on the different baits, lures and fishing techniques. In the end I think everyone had a very enjoyable time. The good news is that they have individually promised to bring their families back to visit the area again in the future and that would result in a good boost for local businesses on both sides of the river. Keep safe out there and enjoy your voting day and hope to see you soon here on the Breede River
