π Member Spotlight: Carol Jarvis π
Meet Carol Jarvis, who this year celebrates an incredible 20 years of running with Chiltern! Carol first joined in 2005 after spotting a Scratch Club advert while on hockey off-season, and running quickly became a game-changer for her asthmatic chest. From hockey player to endurance athlete, she has shown what determination and belief can achieve.
Carolβs Comrades journey is full of grit and inspiration. Her very first Comrades in 2005 came after a last-minute qualifier at the Indian Ocean Marathon β proving her motto of βnever give up.β In 2010 she battled nausea from Lion Park Bridge to Durban using a run-walk strategy, ultimately catching and passing the 12-hour bus right here in Westville. And in 2019, working toward time splits and finding a burst of competitive spirit at Big Pollyβs, she once again made the finish line unforgettable. For Carol, βthe game is not over until the final whistle blows.β
Beyond running, Carol enjoys sewing and teaching extra lessons, especially helping children who are on the edge of failing. She also cycles and swims, and dreams of conquering her fear of the sea to one day take on triathlons. Her goal is to return to a sub-five-hour marathon and qualify for Comrades again.
What keeps Carol motivated is simple yet powerful: staying fit, building lung capacity, and being ready for whatever challenges life brings. And of course, the friendly, welcoming spirit of Chiltern β a club where, in her words, βit doesnβt matter whether youβre a racing snake or a back-of-the-pack runner, you are welcome and accepted.β ππ§‘
