Pilates and menopause, all you need to know...

Your sleep changes. Your energy changes, and the workouts that used to work suddenly don't, and sometimes they actually make things worse. You push harder but feel more exhausted.

Here is what's happening: as oestrogen and progesterone levels shift, your body's ability to recover changes. High-intensity training can spike cortisol, which, during this stage of life, can worsen fatigue, disrupt sleep, and make it harder for your body to manage weight rather than easier.

Pilates is one of the most intelligent exercise choices a woman in perimenopause or menopause can make.

It builds and preserves muscle mass, which is critical because muscle is what keeps your metabolism functioning as hormones shift. It strengthens the joints without harming them. A Pilates class should leave you feeling like you understand your body better than you did an hour ago. If it doesn't, something may be missing.

Signs you are in good hands:
- Your instructor is watching the room, not performing to it.
- You get alignment cues throughout, not just at the start.
- You actually know what your body is supposed to be doing during each movement. - Corrections happen, and they feel helpful.
- Quality of movement matters more than smashing out reps.

At Imprint, our classes are kept small, so you will never feel lost in the room. You will always get hands-on attention, and every exercise will make sense because I will tell you why you are doing it.

Most people who come to me with back pain have already tried everything. The physio, stretches they found online, sleeping with a pillow between their knees. Things may improve for a bit, but then occasionally the pain creeps back in, and eventually they just learn to live with it.

What nobody told them is that sometimes the back is not the problem. It's the core that needs work.

In most cases of chronic lower back pain, the real issue is a core that is not supporting the body the way it should, and the back is compensating.
