The start list is out, and we are proud to have 81 Westville members lining up for the 99th Comrades Marathon, including 17 Green Number legends.

While race day gets the attention, those who have run Comrades know that getting to that start line is often the hardest part. Months of training, sacrifice and discipline all lead to that moment on the start line.

We also spare a thought for those who trained just as hard but won't be there this year due to injury, illness or circumstances beyond their control. Comrades can be unforgiving, and we know how much it hurts when the dream is taken away.

To everyone lining up on race day, we wish you a safe and successful run. And to our Westville runners, know that your entire club is behind you all the way.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us for this morningโ€™s Comrades Send-Off Walk. It was fantastic to see so many of our runners together ahead of race day, with supporters, family and friends there to cheer them on.

To all our Comrades runners: the hard work is done. The early mornings, long runs and months of training have brought you to this point. Trust your preparation, believe in yourselves, and enjoy every step of this incredible journey.

A Green Number is one of the most prestigious achievements in South African running, awarded to athletes who complete their 10th Comrades Marathon. It represents years of commitment, perseverance, sacrifice, early mornings, tough training sessions, overcoming setbacks, and an unwavering passion for the sport.

This year, Westville Athletic Club is incredibly proud to celebrate two members who will be lining up on Sunday in pursuit of this remarkable milestone:

Westville Athletic Club is saddened by the passing of former Chairman, dedicated club member and accomplished runner, Paul "Kiwi" Eichert.

Paul was an all-or-nothing individual whose determination, discipline and pursuit of excellence defined both his professional life and his running. He believed in hard work, consistency and having a plan โ€“ and then putting in the effort required to achieve it. His commitment to training and his relentless drive for improvement were reflected in an outstanding running career.

Paul completed 18 Comrades Marathons, earning an impressive 11 silver medals. Eight of those finishes were achieved proudly in Westville Athletic Club colours, representing the club with distinction and dedication.

Passionate about the future of Westville AC, Paul was never afraid to share ideas on how he believed the club could improve and grow. That passion led him to take on the role of Chairman in 2011. While his term was brief, it gave him a deeper appreciation for the work that goes into building and sustaining a successful running club, and he remained a committed and supportive member of the Westville family thereafter.

Beyond his own achievements, Paul also believed in using his running to make a difference. During the 2020 lockdown, he completed a remarkable 100km run within the confines of his Somerset West property to raise awareness and support for children battling cancer โ€“ a challenge that perfectly reflected his determination, generosity and willingness to go the extra mile for a worthy cause.

Paul's legacy is one of commitment, perseverance and passion for the sport he loved. He will be remembered not only for his achievements on the road, but also for the energy, enthusiasm and dedication he brought to Westville Athletic Club.

Our sincere condolences go to Paul's family, friends and fellow runners.
