Berg River Canoe Marathon 2026 was a special one. Unfortunately not the cleanest race from me but I can honestly say it was some of the strongest 4 days I’ve had on the water.
After an unbelievable first 2 days on the water, day 3 was looking to be another exciting day. For about 50kms it was some of the most fun I’ve ever had racing, but unfortunately a loss of concentration going through a tree led to me snapping the shaft of my paddle open. After the help of a very friendly spectator and some duct tape from n_eriyah I was able to salvage the day eventually. So a relatively heart breaking occurrence for me. I managed to keep my head up on day 4 and end the race 5th overall.
It was a truly unreal 4 days racing and I’m honestly gutted that it’s over. Even with the incident, it was incredible and such a privilege to be fit and able to race at the front with such a great group of guys who I have learnt so much from.
A huge thank you must go to Gara Paddles for the new weapon that kept me going forward.
To the Kriel family, Conrad Kriel, Lize Kriel, Dawie Kriel and Dawid Kriel for taking me in for the 4 days and for the unbelievable seconding, thank you so much !
My girlfriend Lisa Sharpe was also such a vital support. As well as Lisa’s support Amber.
It was also so awesome to have my parents at the finish.
And to everyone who commented on a post or replied to a story, I felt every bit of encouragement and I’m so grateful to have such epic people around me !
