Origins Ultra Trail - Contest of speed!

Origins Ultra Trail will take place at Wetlands Game Lodge. Situated 6.5km outside of Wakkerstroom, Wetlands Game Lodge is a quick three-and-a-half-hour drive from Johannesburg or Pretoria.

Participants can book accommodation for the Origins Ultra Trail and enjoy comfort and luxury. With comfortable rooms and natural beauty with stunning views to relax after a great day on the trails, Wetlands offers the perfect spot to start and end your trail challenge. Each room has two single beds with an en-suite bathroom.

This runnable mountain trail boasts a variety of trail running terrain - rocky trails, animal paths, jeep track, technical single track, steep climbs and fast descends. With an elevation gain of 2,287m and 5 water points, the Origins 50 will push trail runners from the start.

The Origins Ultra Trail is the perfect trail running weekend away. Explore untouched trails with stunning views and immerse yourself in nature surrounded by buffalo, buck and other animals as you traverse through the Donkerhoek wilderness and experience trail running at its very finest.

Repeater Hill.

Sitting at jut under 2,100m above sea level, Repeater Hill is the highest point along the ORIGINS 50 route. After a brief stop at Buffalos Bedroom, its a quick climb back to the ridge line via Christmas Tree path and up to Repeater Hill.

ORIGIN50 runners will start their journey at Wetlands Game Lodge at 05H00 on Saturday 1st of October. After an initial short downhill warm-up, the route will take participants up to the plateaus overlooking Wetlands and the surrounding lands. This is a fast-undulating section which follows the boundary fence and then descending into Wetlands Forest before climbing back up to the furthest point of Wetlands, over the fence and into the neighbouring 15,000-hectare Donkerhoek section of the run.

After a brief run along the ridge line, runners will head down into the valley below and the first water point at the Buffalos Bedroom. After a brief stop, its a quick climb back to the ridge line via Christmas Tree path and up to Repeater Hill - the highest point (2,136m) on the route and with great views of Donkerhoek and the surrounding areas.

Participants will then make their way to the aid station at Donkerhoek Lodge via Donkerhoek Ridge, down Bummer, through Dory's Meander and past Donkerhoek Forest. Once at Donkerhoek Lodge, runners can top up with water, snacks, warm soup and other items before an epic run to Holbak Gorge. This section is a wide variety of terrain including forests, fast flat trail, rolling hills and jeep track before climb up Holbak Wall to the checkpoint at Repeater Hill.

Runners now prepare for the final fast and flat 25KM back into Wetlands and down Horse Hill. The final descent is down an easy and winding jeep track before emerging next to Wetlands trout dam and the last few hundred meters to the finish line.

After an initial short uphill warm-up run through the Horse Forest, the route will take participants down to the main gate before a quick climb up and around the Ni**le and to the plateaus overlooking Wetlands and the surrounding lands. This is a fast-undulating section which follows the boundary fence before descending to Old Rock Bridge and into the Wetlands Forest . The final climb then takes runners up to to the furthest point of Wetlands and the water point. Here is there where the 50KM runners head through the fence and into Donkerhoek Farm.

Runners now prepare for the final fast and undulating route back into Wetlands and down Horse Hill. The final descent is down an easy and winding jeep track before emerging next to Wetlands trout dam and the last few hundred meters to the finish line.
