Saturday 05/09/2026.

A beautiful day at Eikendal dam, on the R44 towards Somerset-West.

Before we continue.... the venue is real, the picture of the fishermen are AI generated. But this is to tell the story.

We went out for a family visit, and as it so happens, my hands started to itch for fishing. Now, I love fishing and the waters it provides.

I did not plan on a fishing trip and also did not bring any rods or any fishing gear.

I saw three people fly fish, because that is the only allowable discipline in these dams.

So, I walked over to the one uncle, casting his line, and sat at the table, watching him. It was merely a few minutes when he offered me his rod. I did not hesitate, because he is an elderly, amd respect needs to be shown to the elderly, so I happily obliged. I was nervous at first, because it is like driving with someone elses car, but I did it anyways.

Cast out a few flies, and changed out the colour and presentation, only to catch two bass in the next 15 minutes.

We talked a bit, and the uncle knew a few people from Vredendal.

So why di I tell this story.

It shows that older people are much more gracious than our younger generation. It shows good sportsmanship and also sharing the love of the sport.

Luckily I am a keen fly fishermen, so I made little effort of the situation.

That uncle, made my day and created a fond memory I will never forget.

Lets follow this example to be the better of ourselves, and to share what we have with others who do not have.
