❄️ WELCOME METEOROLOGICAL WINTER ❄️
DID YOU KNOW?
Meteorological and astronomical winter start on different dates!
For meteorologists, winter starts on 1 June and runs through June, July and August. This is called meteorological winter, and it helps us compare seasonal weather patterns more easily.
Astronomical winter starts with the winter solstice, when the Southern Hemisphere has its shortest day and longest night of the year.
In 2026, the winter solstice in South Africa falls on Sunday, 21 June at 10:24 SAST.
So while the calendar says winter starts today, the shortest day of the year is still on its way!
Winter in South Africa often brings rainfall to the winter rainfall region, along with snow, frost, strong winds and colder conditions linked to cold fronts and cut-off low-pressure systems.
Time to layer up and stay informed as the weather turns colder.🧣
