Ocean Oddity: The Frogfish
While exploring the reef recently, we spotted one of the ocean’s strangest little critters… the frogfish.
Frogfish are masters of disguise. Their bumpy, leafy skin helps them blend perfectly with sponges, coral, and seaweed so prey swims right past without noticing. Then in a blink of an eye, they strike, gulping down fish almost their own size.
Frogfish belong to the anglerfish family Antennariidae, and there are about 50+ species. Many reefs actually have them, but divers often swim right past because frogfish are camouflage champions. They blend perfectly with sponges, algae, and coral, and their colours change to match surroundings.
Some species like the Hairy Frogfish look like fuzzy seaweed, while the Warty Frogfish resembles a sponge blob. Yes, all the species are all very strange-looking!
Keep an eye on the reef next time you dive… the strangest creatures are often hiding in plain sight!
