3Rivers Trails NPC is an organisation which is dedicated to bringing quality mountain biking, running and hiking trails to the greater Thornhill region – a rural region approximately 40 kilometres to the west of Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The trail network has been in operation for seven years with trails being built and maintained on the properties of Woodridge College, Crossways Farm Village, Bluegums Farm, Jbay Bike Park and Longmore Forest. At present 3Rivers operates approximately 200 km of marked trail, with approximately 35 km of this being purpose-built single track which can be accessed from any of its three trail heads located at Woodridge College, Jbay Bike Park and Crossways Country Kitchen.

🎉 Trail Update

We’re pleased to let you know that the trails are open to the general public again.

As there is still Foot and Mouth Disease in the area, we ask that everyone helps us protect the farm by following these biosecurity measures:

- All bikes and shoes must be clean before you arrive.
- Disinfect bikes and shoes upon entry.
- Entry is via Bluegums Gate only.
- Absolutely no access through any back gates into Longmore or anywhere else on the trail network.

Open trails:

🚵‍♀️🏃‍♀️🚶 Open for hikers, runners & cyclists:
• Purple Cow
• Oxwagon Pass
• Protea Fields
• Yellow Monkey
• Baby Monkey

🚵 Cyclists only:
• Dam Buster
• Room with a View

🏃‍♀️🚶 Hikers & runners only:
• Cairn Loop
• Spring Valley
• Black Mamba
• Forest Hike

We hope to have part of Red Holstein open by next weekend. Thank you for your patience!

🚨 Trail Update

- Trails remain open to annual members only to limit the number of people entering the farm while there is a suspected case of Foot and Mouth Disease in the Thornhill area.
- The same trails as last weekend remain open.
- Access into Longmore remains completely closed (even if you are an annual member). No entering via any back gates into Longmore. There is extensive road damage, and this also poses a biosecurity risk.

We know the closures due to the floods, and now the Foot and Mouth situation, are incredibly frustrating—and we’re feeling it too. We have completed booster vaccinations for our cattle and are hopeful that we’ll be able to reopen the trails to the public soon. We’re also working hard to get the longer-distance routes open again as soon as it’s safe to do so.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and continued support. We really appreciate it.

Important Trail Update - Suspected Foot and Mouth Case in Thornhill ⚠️🐄

Due to a suspected case of Foot and Mouth Disease in our area, we have made the difficult decision to RESTRICT TRAIL ACCESS TO ANNUAL MEMBERS ONLY until further notice. This allows us to better manage the number of people entering the farm.

We understand that this is frustrating, especially after the recent trail closures due to the flooding. We are truly sorry for the inconvenience. Unfortunately, these circumstances are beyond our control, and we need to put the health of our animals and the livelihoods of the staff and families who depend on the farm first.

We sincerely appreciate your patience, understanding, and continued support during this time.

⚠️ Friendly reminder — our trails are NOT free. Please share this far and wide.

3Rivers Trails is a non-profit organisation that relies solely on permit income and the occasional event to maintain the trails and keep our 4 local trail staff employed.

Every permit purchased goes directly back into caring for the trails, repairing damage, improving routes, and keeping this space open for our community to enjoy.

We do this because we love the outdoors, we love creating a place where people can run, ride and explore, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who supports us by paying for their permit.

Please remember to purchase your permit before entering the trails — it’s what keeps 3Rivers flowing 🌿

18m later 👋

A huge thank you to and the trail crew for putting in the hard work to get a more permanent solution for the Purple Cow riverbed sorted.

We’ve also created a short new section of trail to approach the bridge at a better angle, making the crossing smoother and safer.

The new long bridge will be for cyclists only, and we’ve added a separate short section to the left of the bridge for walkers and runners to use safely.

Thanks for your patience while we’ve worked through the flood damage — we’re excited to keep improving the trails! 🌿
