CJ's Raceway in Durban, race report for 2026-08-19.

Eight racers arrived for Group5 and LMP/IMSA with mixed results.

Results.

Group5.

1st Mark Jansen - 152,68 laps. 2nd Jose Thomas - 150,56.

3rd Adam Bowen - 147,93. 4th Costa Psannis - 147,17.

5th Paul Schofield - 146,85 and 6th Adriaan Dreyer - 142,50 laps. Followed close behind by Dylan van Rensburg and Darrin Quick.

LMP/IMSA.

Some incredible racing, last night to finalise the final podium place.

1st Mr.Speedy - 163,55 laps. 2nd Buddah - 163,24. 3rd DJ Jose - 160,11. 4th Pawn Star -156,83. 5th Costickles - 156,09. 6th Sir BAM BAM - 152,68. Followed by Big Bear and Big Guy. (I'll leave you to work these names out!)

A great night's racing pity we missed Keagan Bowen who succumbed to the dreaded lurgy!

OK Mr Speedy, we are getting closer but well done on the "double" yet again!.

A Tribute to Andre Thomas:

A Racing Legend’s Eternal Lap

The slot car racing community lost a piece of its heart when a true pioneer steps away from the track, but the legacy left behind by Andre Thomas is far from fading. Known as a titan of the trigger and a master of the chassis, Andre didn't just race slot cars—he defined an era of precision, passion, and competitive spirit.
While Andre has completed his final lap, the engine of his incredible legacy keeps roaring. The Thomas name remains a dominant force on the track, carried forward by his two sons, Jose Thomas and Tino Thomas. Motivated by their father's memory and armed with the skills he passed down, Jose and Tino are actively keeping the Thomas legend alive. Every perfect corner they take, every podium they claim, and every young racer they inspire is a living testament to Andre's enduring impact on the sport. Andre Thomas built a racing dynasty, and through his sons, that legendary spirit will never stop rolling.

60 YEARS OF SAMCA - THE FIRST CHAMPIONS

So, who were SAMCA's first champions?

The inaugural National Championship got underway at the Aberaz Club on 6 April 1966, with two classes - Sports/GT and Formula 1.

Andre Thomas of Ecurie Elite Model Racing Car Club became SAMCA's first South African Champion, winning the Sports/GT Class. Andre successfully defended his Sports/GT title in 1967 and also won the newly introduced Saloon Car Class that year.

Mike Baxter of Equipe Veloce won the Formula 1 Class in 1966.

Colin Lotz, who was there as a 12-year-old, remembers cars painted in team colours and simple white paper dots marked with a coloured X being used as lane stickers.

And that was the start of 60 years of SAMCA National Championship racing!

Race Report - 2026/07/22, from CJ's Raceway in Durban, South Africa.

Firstly, we welcomed Frank Smith from PTA - East club, to CJ's to race Group5 and LMP and he picked up a few hints on the way!

For once, we had a full field of eleven racers and is the norm. for a Wednesday some hectic racing and some incredible lap times recorded in both classes.

Results.

Group 5.

1st Mark Jansen - 155,03 laps. 2nd Jose Thomas - 148,53.

3rd Adam Bowen - 147,34. 4th Paul Schofield - 145,75.

5th Adriaan Dreyer - 143,73 and 6th Keagan Bowen - 142,62 laps.

Followed by Costa Psannis, Darrin Quick, Dylan van Rensburg. Frank Smith and Jason Blane.

Mark completely obliterated every lane's Lap record which now stand at:- RED lane - 6,061 seconds.

BLUE lane - 6,090

GREEN lane - 6,090 and

YELLOW lane - 6,151 seconds.

12 months ago these would not disgrace an LMP race. Congratulations Mark that's some achievement.

LMP.

1st Adam - 164,58 laps. 2. Mark - 164,42. 3rd Jose - 157,98.

4th Adriaan - 156,82. 5th Paul - 156,20 and 6th Costa - 155,34 laps.

Followed by Dylan, Darrin, Frank, Jason and Keagan (retired with car failure!)

Adm & Mark swopping quick lap times in every heat. Adriaan deslotting too much and Frank Smith for his first time with an LMP car acquitting himself admirably.

Fastest lap Adam in 5,665 seconds on RED lane.

Two classes - Group5 and LMP. (four-minute heats).

Results.

Group5. Some very close racing here!

1st Mark Jansen - 153,82 laps. 2nd Adam Bowen - 148,60.

3rd Paul Schofield - 148,10. 4th Jose Thomas - 148,04.

5th Keagan Bowen - 143,80 and 6th Adriaan Dreyer - 141,01 laps.

Followed by Darrin Quick and Costa Psannis (Retired in heat 4 with controller malfunction!)

Lap records annihilated by Mark on all lanes with the best of 6,093 seconds on RED lane. We await the first sub 6,0 sec. lap, shortly!

LMP.

1st Adam - 164,49 laps. 2nd Mark - 161,94. 3rd Keagan - 161,67.

4th Costa - 160,75. Followed by Jose, Paul, Darrin and Adriaan.

Congratulations to Adam breaking the Jansen stranglehold. Doing it with some incredibly fast laps!

Ecurie, racing at CJ's last night 2026/07/03.

Two great classes Porsche P956 and GT3.

One day we'll get the "Big Guy" being 100% serious about racing!!

I hope everyone enjoyed the evening as I did. We missed you Gordon Neal who was on duty at Dezzis ( or whatever it's called, these days).
