The PowerPlant is a hybrid fitness studio, offering a unique combination of Jiu Jitsu (grappling), Kickboxing and functional conditioning. We specialize in offering students the chance to learn the most effective ground and striking martial arts in the world, whilst, at the same time becoming stronger, faster and fitter.

Jiu Jitsu is the ground-based martial art made famous by the Gracie family and that revolutionized the fighting world in the 90’s. We offer classes in No-gi Jiu Jitsu (without a gi), but classes in the gi are available as privates (personal training). For standup (striking,) we focus on a combination of the highly effective arts of boxing and kickboxing. Caveman training is the conditioning routines used by fighters to prepare themselves for combat. It is a combination of strength, cardiovascular and plyometric training, which taxes all the body’s energy systems. Privates (personal training) are adjusted to the client’s personal needs (weight loss, fitness, sports conditioning, self-defence, or just one-on-one training in one of the above-mentioned systems).

Congratulations on your blue belt promotion Fritz!

“Thanks to everyone for this huge honour.
As it is written, “iron sharpens iron”.
Thanks to the coaches and the core group for the time invested. It has only been 3yrs and 1month since I stepped onto the mat😂.
In fairness, many injuries and setbacks during that time. It’s hard, every time, to get back onto the mat if you take on BJJ in this season of your life. A bunch of young guys in peak physical condition smashing you week after week. I’ll take the upgrade for not quitting when I felt like dying. BJJ is the hardest and most amazing I have ever done. It’s not for everyone. It seems to attract a different breed. I like it.
Thanks again to all for the kind words and support. I will miss the Powerplant crew dearly next year. It has become a big part of my life. Thanks again.”

The name “Boa” is derived from the Boa Constrictor, one of the top predators in the Amazon jungle. It kills through cutting off the victims blood supply through encircling pressure. Among jungle tribes, the Boa is held in in high regard as a great teacher. The snake symbolises important lessons, such as the ability to shed old skin and renew oneself - an ancient concept revered among successful warriors. Periods of renewal are crucial for healing or adapting when facing difficult journeys or unexpected changes.

The analogy of our world being a jungle is fitting because it’s full of countless obstacles, challenging situations, unknowns and surprises that we will inevitably encounter. Jiu Jitsu equips us with the skills and the mindset to handle both physical and mental pressures and adversities. Through disciplined skill acquisition we learn to balance hard and soft approaches, gaining confidence through competence in dealing with chaos.

The swords symbolise the warriors approach. A warrior is decisive and swift. By sharpening our swords daily, we improve our ability to make sharper decisions. Decisions are crucial, as the word “decision” originates from “to cut”, separating what we need to do from what we want to do. Better decisions lead to more success and a better life.

The discipline of acquiring skills under difficult circumstances forces us to shed old habits, increasing our power and self-understanding. It requires us to stay humble and have a beginners mind as there are always aspects of our skill set to correct or improve. As your skills develop, your decisions become swifter and more effective, giving you greater freedom and control in dealing with adversities. When you combine these principles of shedding, decisiveness, humility, internal control and skill acquisition you truly become a warrior.

Throughout the years, Powerplant has built a strong core of BJJ practitioners and coaches. Much like the Boa constrictor shedding its skin as it grows, we’ve decided to establish our BJJ team under a new name and ethos, refreshing our approach.

Xolisani "Skeleton" Thembani, Born in East london Eastern Cape. Started boxing at the age of 13. Represented Western Cape 3 times at the national championships and CPUT and 2 times at the USSA national champions obtaining silver and gold medals.

Established Kayamandi boxing academy and started coaching in 2019.
