Wild Fly Fishing in the Karoo

Alan has such a rewarding job. Taking a bunch of mates out to fish, and getting them all into trout on one of our premier waters. It's nippy here in the Karoo in winter, but the days are generally beautiful, and the still water fish relatively obliging.

Tough job, but someone's got to do it! 🎣😁

A cold miserable day fishing is still better than a day spent in the office! It has been bitterly cold on top of the mountain, but the water is looking great, and a couple of nice rainbows have come to the net in the last week or two.

This week's knot is the Needle knot. Alan always carries a needle in his fishing bag, just in case a client hauls out a line that needs a little TLC. Very handy knot this!

Alan posted pictures of his beetles on his personal profile, and one comment asked us to match the flies to the fish they caught. Here is a start...his Backswimmer fly has proven itself time and again, for both yellowfish and trout. Backswimmers offer a protein-dense meal for both yellowfish and trout. They are highly visible when they move through the water when returning to the surface for air, so vulnerable to predation. Have you tried to fish a backswimmer recently?

Did you know that Alan's flies are so intriguing that he even sells them to non-fishermen? Okay, they bought them for friends that do fly fish, but these visitors at Angler and Antelope Guesthouse were so taken with Alan's description, that he made it onto their blog post, despite the post being about post offices, well, mostly!
