Primal Motion Primal Motion is a physical training and movement coaching service that offers improvements in movement quality, functional capacity and athletic performance.

Strength. Stability. Agility. Primal Motion aims to maximise the fluidity and freedom that your body was built to provide – for the entirety of your life. The underlying idea is to make you as efficient as possible. This means that you move more, expend less energy, suffer less injury and live a happier and longer life – no matter how many kilometres you’ve already expended on your life’s odometer

. Whether you are an elite athlete or a retired accountant, we are all designed with the same blueprint and physiological capabilities. What varies is the stimulation we receive and what we do to maintain optimum performance and function. The athlete needs fine-tuning, calibration and relief from the strains of repetitive exercises. For others, the long hours spent in a sedentary “workstyle” require a counterbalance to the negative effects of prolonged sitting and reduced body movement.

“From a young age it was obvious to those around me that I was happiest when being active. Growing up, gymnastics, dancing, and aerial circus consumed a large part of my life. When I finished school and moved on from those hobbies, I discovered my love for the gym and hiking. My growing passion for movement and exercise ultimately led me to explore the extensive impact that it can have on our lives. Today I find myself in a profession that just makes so much sense, and I feel grateful to be able to say that I really love what I do.

As a strength and conditioning coach, my focus is on helping people to reach their full potential. Whether it be sports specific or a longevity based endeavour. And as I have discovered my personal love for trail running, my coaching has expanded too with a focus on running-specific training, which can greatly improve athletic performance, and importantly reduce risk of injuries.

Ultimately, training with me at Primal Motion is personalised to help you reach your goals, with a general focus on improving your overall well-being through enhancing mobility, strength, and functionality”

“A lifelong love of all things sport led me to complete a Biokinetics degree at the University of Port Elizabeth. This formed the basis of my entry into the health and fitness world. In the intervening years I have continuously worked on expanding my knowledge and understanding of how the body moves, heals and performs; to become a more rounded trainer.

My sporting journey has drawn me into the endurance world where I have dabbled with Triathlon and Half Ironman races, and I am still an avid trail runner, sub 3 hour marathoner and a sub 1:24 half marathon finisher. Through my run coaching offering I have helped clients achieve goals ranging from completing their first 5km to successfully completing 100Km trail runs.

The ideology I’ve developed over the 20 years in this industry is; to get people moving and keep them moving. I’m a firm believer that movement is medicine. Whether you are coming back from injury, starting out on a fitness journey or looking to optimise your current fitness regime, I aim to help you map a plan that gets you on the road to achieving your fitness goals”

“My early introduction to human movement was through gymnastics and martial arts, which required me to utilise my body to its fullest extent as well as learning how to control it better.

As my understanding of the complexity of movement and movement potential developed, my interest in my own bodies capabilities, motivated me to expand my knowledge and explore what I was capable of and how far I could evolve.

This is where my focus shifted to peak performance, where I took to Strength and Conditioning, High Performance training, Sports Specific training and Calisthenics.

My philosophy is that an individual should be able to move their bodies effortlessly through multiple joint ranges and planes of motion with an emphasis on empowering individuals with the right skill set and knowledge to inspire a healthy lifestyle”

My natural inclination towards exercise and athletic aptitude has developed into a lifelong pursuit to gain a deeper understanding of human function and performance.

Motivated by my curiosity to discover more about my own movement potential and physical capabilities, I am constantly exploring how to enhance our capabilities as human beings. I have particular interests in evolutionary biology, corrective movement pattern training and movement conditioning.

My aim is to build human bodies that are supple, strong and resilient enough to take on any task that is thrown at them”

A huge congratulations to one of our Primal Motion practitioners, Conor! 🏃

Today he finished the Cape Town Marathon in an incredible time of 2:56:13 - a massive achievement beating his goal of sub 3 hours.

Well done Con, we have watched you put in the work over the last few months - sticking to the program no matter what, through all of Cape Town’s crazy weather conditions.

This sub 3 win is very well deserved, and we are all so proud of you ❤️‍🔥

Much like wealth accumulation and compound interest, consistent application of health habits and practices will pay dividends over the long term. We want you to think of this as “health wealth”.

Each day you should be making deposits into your health account (any elements from the Primal Pie) and minimize the debits leaving your account (bad food/drink, sedentary lifestyle, stress) and let compound interest take care of the rest.

Start small if you need to but commit to doing a little bit every day and you will gain momentum. As we’ve mentioned before, “it’s easier to stay on the horse and keep riding than it is to have fallen off and having to climb back
up again”!

To enhance performance output and movement mastery you need to move efficiently and economically, in other words you must exercise control throughout the entirety of your movements.

Increasing your proprioceptive awareness will facilitate improved neuromuscular control and result in more fluid flowing movement, balance and co-ordination thus ensuring less adaptive compensation, energy expenditure and injury.

Primal Motion will promote movement control via segmental and global joint mobility drills, neuromuscular feedback and proprioceptive balance tasks and dynamic primal movement sequences.🤘
