A follow- up photograph of the previous post. The Dalbergia armata here in full leave.
The connected-rootpiece bonsai still in training. I am greatly satified with the reduction of leave size achieved in 6years.

Dalbergia armata.
Thorny rope tree

To me personally this is an excellent example of the 'connected rootpiece' style. Trees different in height and thickness from out the base. But all the trees must be of the same style , movement and flow so it creates good harmony, pleasing to the eye. This tree is still in training.
In front is n little terracotta pot overgrown with beautiful moss.

a Little Ficus burt-davyi bonsai 2016
Grown from a cutting.

Common name: veld fig
Noemnaam: veld vy.
Amazing how a tree changes over a couple of years. This one I did not interfere a much...rather left it to follow its own style.
These photographs were taken respectively 2020, 2021, 2023 and the last one taken last week 2026 then. To my mind and experience one of the best tapered trunks this tree has.

A follow-up on my previous post dd 16 March 2026. Dalbergia armata.
Since styling the bonsai I've defoliated the tree multiple times. The purpose of doing this is to achieve reduction in the size of the leaves. When this shrubby tree grows in the wild the leave size is about 10 times the size of what I achieved regarding size with this miniature version of it.
The second photograph is to show how multiple branches were growing from the base.

Taken a piece of root from the wild and planting it in a container in February 2020. Left it to grow for a couple of years to see what the plantmaterial has to offer me.
On 14 May 2025 I decided to style the tree after noticing the potential as time went by. I was quite surpised with what it rendered. The thorny rope is a fast growing tree and loves water.

A follow-up to my "spekboom bonsai" project. Refer to post on 9th February.
I e Styling bonsai.
Notice the new growth on the tips of the branches in approx 6 months . Since Sept 2025 to February 2026.
The branches on the righthand side of the trainee bonsai should go through a selective pruning at some stage.

In my opinion this Dalbergis armata (thorny rope tree) is an excellent specimen of the 'exposed root style'. For it is convincingly true to what one see in nature. Naturally eroded soil ... washed away from the surface and exposing the roots. The same colour in the roots and as in the trunk. The roots draped and with good flow and movement. This tree is approx 20cm high
(without the pot), and is 9years old

Learn to bonsai
by Nikkie Cilliers

In my journey of growing trees since 1986, the one thing that is precious to me is when a dedicated loyal customer ask me to come/to go to their place taking care of his or her trees. This lady (on the left side of the photograph busy prunibg/assisting me) bought most of the over 30 trees in her collection from me during early 1990 and early 2000's. Many of the trees still in the pots she bought from me. Such a pleasure to prune or reshape and/or rootprune properly cared for trees.
