Statement: Destructive Fires at Lawrence de Lange Game Reserve
The Lawrence de Lange Honorary Ranger Association is saddened to report on the impact of
recent fires that have severely affected our game reserve. These fires, started sporadically
late in August in our region and resulted in a particularly destructive situation Thursday,
September 14th, when a fire originating from Madeira Mountain swept through the reserve
in the early afternoon.
In response to this situation, the Honorary Rangers, in collaboration with volunteer
firefighters, concerned members of the public, the Fire Protection Association and the
municipal fire brigade, worked determinedly for over 72 hours to manage the destructive trail
that was left by the fire. Many of our dedicated rangers suspended their normal occupation
duties to assist.
The extent of the damage is substantial: The fire caused damage to the reserve's
infrastructure, with the reserve fence line sustaining damage at multiple locations.
Approximately 70% of the Lawrence de Lange reserve was burned. This extensive loss of veld
is likely to result in food shortages for the resident game species.
In this light it is with heavy hearts that we must announce the postponement of our annual
Long Hill Challenge, which historically serves as the Honorary Rangers' most significant
fundraising event. It is imperative to note that the Honorary Rangers rely fully on the funds
generated through such fundraising initiatives to support the maintenance, conservation and
preservation of this beautiful reserve.
We are very grateful for the dedication of all those who assisted in combating these fires. We
will continue as best we can to conserve our beautiful reserve.
