"𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗶𝗳 𝗮𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗵𝗼𝗹 𝗮𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗲𝗱" - 𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗢𝗦𝗔 𝗗𝗲𝗽. 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗻𝘀.

DENOSA 2nd Deputy President, Linah Jiyane, has warned of a bleak future for the country if alcohol abuse, which is often the main cause of various forms of Gender-Based Violence, is not curbed.

She was addressing the DENOSA National Gender event on Alcohol Abuse and Sexual Harrassment Awareness at Cecilia Makiwane Hospital in KuGompo City, Eastern Cape.

She warned that alcohol abuse in many provinces is creeping and embedding itself into a culture that gets practiced in cultural functions at home, which often gets to young kids as young as 12 years.

She has warned of a continuous behavior of sexual harassment in the workplace, where female workers often get sent, via messages, unacceptable and unsolicited content from male counterparts and managers, which is a form of sexual harassment.

She urges the institutions to come up with programmes that address such tendencies.

COSATU Eastern Cape Provincial Secretary, Mkhawuleli "Gura" Maleki, has applauded the DENOSA Gender structure for implementing the Alcohol Abuse and Sexual Harassment Awareness programme onto the healthcare workforce, saying DENOSA, as a strategic revolutionary union for COSATU, is striking at the core causes of societal disintegration, which is also striking at the youth, in a month that is generally known as youth month.

"COSATU is against Gender-Based Violence, and we must speak up against it wherever it rears its ugly head," he said, endorsing the event.

The event is underway at the Cecilia Makiwane Hospital in KuGompo City.
