UP-Tuks BSc Geography and Environmental student Troy Zillen of , is set to represent ๐ฟ๐ฆ South Africa at the 2026 World U23 Rowing Championships in Germany this July in the lightweight men's single sculls. He will also compete at the FISU World University Rowing Championships in Canada in August.
๐ฃ๏ธ "I am really chuffed. At long last, I have achieved the goal I set for myself."
Zillen has enjoyed an outstanding season. At the South African Senior National Rowing Championships, he was part of the Tuks men's eight crew that won gold and also claimed bronze in the men's single sculls. At the USSA Sprint Regatta, he won three gold medals, while at the Buffalo Regatta he added two gold medals and a silver to his tally.
Rowing is often regarded as one of the toughest sports in the world. While Zillen acknowledges the physical demands of racing, he embraces the challenge.
๐ฌ "The actual rowing motion is relatively simple to master, especially in a crew boat. It starts with the stroke, setting a good rhythm for the crew. In the end, every race comes down to who is willing to take that extra stroke and push a little harder."
