🌟The KNEE TO WALL TEST for horse riders🌟
The Knee To Wall test is a great way to assess functional ankle mobility for horse riders.

👉🏻 To perform the test:

➡️ Stand facing a wall
➡️ Place the toes of one foot against the wall, and take a step backwards with the other leg.
➡️ Push your knee forwards until it touches the wall.
➡️ See how far you can walk your foot backwards until your knee can no longer touch the wall.
➡️ Check that your foot is perpendicular to the wall and your heel is down. Make sure your hips are facing forwards and you are not twisting your body or leg in any way.
➡️ Record the maximum distance you’re able to achieve on both sides (measure from the wall to your big toe).

👉🏻 Less than 5cm is generally considered poor ankle mobility, up to 10cm is acceptable, and more than 10cm is good.

👉🏻 More importantly, you want to make sure that your mobility is EQUAL left and right which will ensure symmetrical shock absorption through the ankle joint.

Spiraling in and out on the circle is an extremely useful exercise for horses of all levels. With younger horses you can strengthen and supple the inside hind leg and sharpen his attentiveness to the inside and outside aids, as well as the weight aids. If you spiral in with a slight haunches-in position, you can gradually introduce the horse to a turn on the haunches, and more advanced horses can learn the canter pirouette that way. So, it’s an exercise that can accompany the horse his entire life.

Join us live today (or watch the replay if you can’t make it live) as we explain how this incredibly versatile and useful exercise is used in the classical training tradition of the Spanish Riding School and how you can use it to benefit your horse and your training.

We will teach you how you can use it for younger horses and what to watch for so that you can make it most beneficial for them. We will also teach how you can incorporate lateral movements into the exercise to make it particularly effective for developing the strength and straightness of advanced horses.

You will learn:
- Which seat bone to sit on in order to guide the horse on the line and prevent mistakes and evasions which diminish the benefits of the exercise
- Which way to rotate your hips in the exercise to best support the horse
- How to determine at what point you need to change the bend and spiral back out (it depends upon the horse’s degree of development and training)
- Why “less is more” when determining the angle of the horse in lateral movements in this exercise

We will be teaching this exercise today in our Exercise of the Month Club Membership site. As an EOTM member, you will have access to trainings like this every month where we give you new and (sometimes not so new) exercises to stimulate your creativity in your riding. We discuss mindset, the rider’s seat, and so much more.

Exercise of the Month Club is a month to month subscription with Ritter Dressage. Come for the exercises - stay for the community. You can unsubscribe any time. We’d love to have you join and become a part of our amazing EOTM family.

p.s. we have some big new additions we are adding into EOTM in the near future, but membership rates are going to rise, accordingly. When you become a member now, you lock in your membership at your current low price - forever.
