Living The Dream 🎾

One of the things I admire most about Dietmar Swart is his genuine love for the game. No matter who is on the other side of the net, he steps onto the court with enthusiasm, determination, and a smile on his face.

Dietmar strikes the ball beautifully, works hard, and is always willing to give his best. I also have to say, the Aussie look suits him well! 🇦🇺😄

It’s a pleasure to work with a young player who simply enjoys the journey and embraces every opportunity to learn and improve. He is a talented young player, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for him.

One thing I’ve said many times over the years is that coaching becomes a real pleasure when you’re working with a player who is enthusiastic, energetic, eager to learn, and willing to absorb every piece of information that is shared. Those are the players you can spend hours on court with.

One of those players is Gray Voelzke from the USA, who is currently training with us at the GDTA.

Our main focus this week has been developing a more aggressive and damaging forehand. Gray has always been very consistent from that side, but if you want to reach the next level, you need more than consistency—you need weapons. The challenge is to keep the reliability while adding power, pe*******on, and the ability to hurt opponents.

I’m extremely pleased with the progress Gray has made during his time in South Africa. His work ethic, attitude, and willingness to embrace change have been outstanding.

Thank you, Gray. Working with you has been an absolute pleasure, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for you. Keep learning, keep improving, and keep chasing excellence - Coach Gerrie 🎾💪

Davis Cup Night at the GDTA 🎾

Every now and then we host a Davis Cup evening at the GDTA, and tonight was one of those special nights. Two singles matches and a doubles match, with plenty of competitive spirit, quality tennis, and lots of fun along the way.

The players take it seriously and always want to win, but they never forget to enjoy the game—and that’s exactly what tennis should be about.

Well done to Gray Voelzke, Rynhard van der Laan, Stas Majewski, and Niel Erasmus for putting on a fantastic display of tennis tonight. Great energy, great sportsmanship, and some outstanding shot-making all round.

Fearless Competitor 🎾🇳🇦

Another exciting talent emerging from Namibia. At just 16 years old, Mari van Schalkwyk is already showing the qualities of a serious player — fearless, competitive, and always ready for the challenge.

She competed brilliantly at the recent J60 ITF tournaments in Pretoria and was a pleasure to watch. Mari plays with courage, backs herself in big moments, and never shies away from a fight.

The future of Namibian women’s tennis is looking very bright. Keep working hard, Mari — exciting times lie ahead! 👏🎾🇳🇦

At just 12 years old, Dietmar Swart is already showing the qualities that make a player special. His enthusiasm, passion for the game, and eagerness to learn are a coach’s dream. The progress on his serve has been fantastic to watch, and it’s exciting to see how his game continues to develop. Most importantly, he has a wonderful personality and a great attitude towards improvement.

One of our favourite training games tonight! 🎾

Players were only allowed to hit slice forehands and slice backhands inside the service boxes. The first four balls had to go straight down the middle before they could change direction.

Why? Because it forces constant movement, improves court positioning, and teaches players how to deal with short balls intelligently.

At the recent ITF J60 Pretoria tournament, I noticed many players struggling with short angles and drop shots. Too often they simply put the ball back in play and remain under pressure. The key is to recognise the opportunity, move forward decisively, and use angles, slices, or a well-timed drop shot.

One of the most rewarding parts of coaching is working with players who are open to change. You show them a video of a technical flaw, discuss the solution, and within minutes they start making the necessary adjustments.

A big well done to Alexie Duclair, the top-ranked U14 girl in Canada. After reaching the quarterfinals of the ITF J60 in Pretoria last week, she’s continued to work hard on improving her game. There is still plenty of room for growth, but we’re definitely moving in the right direction.
