Rainbows and sunshine are great, but where's the wind? We're training regardless! Hoping for stronger breezes ahead! Still, the early morning sail was stunning!

After two intense training days battling harsh winds, Saturday's calm waters were a welcome change. We pushed forward and got more first-timers sailing! We even fitted in some swimming lessons.

Sunday Funday! Just completed a swim challenge across the dam from Getie to Booi and it was a blast! 6de Bennie's results: Sonja 1st, Rouke 2nd, Marius 3rd, Chris 4th. Well done, guys!

The fun race ended with a bang, fires were lit, and a movie under the stars. Kids and adults alike had a blast. It was truly a memorable day.

Valentines day fun race was lit! We had doubles on deck and some seriously comedic couples competing! The wind were kind at first, but soon things got hairy – especially for the solo sailor (Boas) on the o'9er who needed rescuing after a close call!

The Poppmeier's story (Part 2)

The Hermanus Sailing Club wholeheartedly welcomed all 156 youth sailors, and we all felt special when we arrived on Saturday, 13 Dec 2026. Sunday we were up early to the beach for a swim in the waves and then back for registration. All boats had to be weighed and dimensions checked; once completed, you received a North Sails rope bag and a Youth Nationals sailing shirt, amongst other items. Angus then rigged up to test the waters. Timing was perfect, as a small group of locals went out at the same time.

Angus was extremely nervous, not knowing what to expect; however, the friendly race officer and committee made it. Monday morning was hectic. Angus’ dad, Andi, was on a marker boat. They started at 8 with all the preparations to get all the support motor boats on the water and to set out the course.
Angus’ mom and his brother, Bruce, were at a nervous Angus’ side while he rigged.

The first “test” race was at 10, but there was no wind, and then all of a sudden it was as if the tap opened at 9:45, and it came streaming through. There was a mad rush to get on the water and to the start line for the 10 am start.

There were two courses, A & B. Dabbies and Laser were on A; oppies were on B. The oppie fleet was large, consisting of A for the experienced and B for the novices.

After a short break for lunch, racing started after 2 pm. There were 3 races, each about an hour long. Angus did well, considering he was up against many experienced Cape Townians, with many years sailing oppies before advancing to Dabbies.

Poppmeier’s story.
We have always been an active family, we love the water, so for us it was a natural tendency to SUP (stand up & paddle), windsurf, and sail for fun.
We joined Boskop for its incredibly clean waters and amazing setting, and have learnt how to sail dinghies.

We were advised to get a Dabbie (Dabchick) by a family that enjoyed the youth circuit. So when we heard Youth Nationals was to be hosted in Hermanus, we as a family decided that it would be really nice to participate, but we knew little of racing and the Dabbie boat, so we travelled to most of the events in North West, Gauteng, and the Vaal. By doing this, we have met other young Dabchick sailors, Optimist sailors, and their families.

To learn as much as we could, not only for Angus but as a family. Watching YouTube videos, talking to sailors, and just being so inquisitive, asking questions — even ChatGPT.

The learning curve has been huge: what do the different types of flags mean, what are the rules of racing? How does the wind change, wind shifts on different tacks? How to make the most of the wind!

This drive to get to Hermanus really started in August, when Angus arrived at Dabchick Gauteng Provincials at Rietvlei, Pretoria, with almost no experience sailing a Dabbie. But we met an incredible team of youth; they have sailed as many Sundays as they can, even during exam season. The sailing events are normally a whole weekend, racing both Saturday and Sunday. However, Youth Nationals is a whole week, and it has flown by.
What fun this adventure has been, juggling weekends to get the most sailing in, to gain the experience with other Dabbie sailors.

The 4th sail training event was super super fun... the wind was soft and the sun was warm and Boskopdam was used as a swimming pool! With over 15 visitors just to learn how to sail! Everyone had a chance to practice on land, and on water!
