Kudu Management Bull Hunt
This old Kudu management bull was a perfect example of an animal that would likely not have made it through the winter. With declining condition and age catching up to him, he was selected as a management animal.
The hunt started with an exciting stalk on a bull high up in the mountains. We carefully worked our way into position, but like many old kudu bulls, he managed to slip away and disappear into the rugged terrain.
Later, we spotted the management bull and took the opportunity. The first shot unfortunately struck the leg, and with daylight fading fast, we made the difficult decision to back out and continue the search the following morning.
At first light, we picked up the tracks and began following them through the mountains. The spoor eventually led us to a steep cliff edge. It became clear that after the shot, the bull had attempted to escape through the rough terrain, but in doing so had jumped from the cliff and broken his neck.
While the recovery wasn't the ending we had planned for, it was a reminder of just how tough and resilient kudu can be. The mountains always have the final say, and this old bull gave us a hunt we won't soon forget.
