DASO Nelson Mandela University

DASO Nelson Mandela University DASO is the Democratic Alliance Students Organisation.

DASO is an ancillary organisation of the Democratic Alliance (DA) based on a tertiary campus, and therefore in itself subscribes to the vision, mission, and strategies of the DA however with its own unique focus. We, the students of the Democratic Alliance Students Organisation, rooted in the values of constitutional liberal democracy, believe that education is the cornerstone of the liberation of

all South African students and the catalyst for the full realisation of the rights and freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution (1996). We further believe that intellectual independence and open debate are vital to the preservation of a healthy democracy. We advocate the enrichment of the whole individual – intellectual, personal, cultural and physical – at institutions of tertiary education, through the development of academic, social, cultural and sporting facilities. We therefore commit ourselves to the protection and promotion of an open and free educational environment based on academic freedom, equality of opportunity and respect for individual worth.

RE: Meal a Day Initiative

Dear Madibaz,

DASO is proud to announce that the DASO-led SRC has officially launched the Meal-a-Day Initiative today, Youth Day.

This initiative aims to provide daily meals to unfunded students, ensuring that no student goes hungry while pursuing their education. We have begun implementation with unfunded students placed in Metro residences, with plans to expand the programme further in the coming weeks.

Access to food is a basic need that directly impacts academic performance and student wellbeing. Through this practical intervention, DASO is delivering real support on the ground and demonstrating our commitment to fighting for every student’s right to succeed.

Together, we are building a campus environment where every student can thrive.

Regards,
DASO-led SRC

RE: Youth Day

Dear Madibaz,

On this Youth Day, DASO honours the courageous young people of 1976 who took to the streets to demand free, quality education and freedom. Your bravery and sacrifice paved the way for our democracy and continue to inspire us today.

We salute every young South African in schools, universities, and communities who are fighting for a better future. You are the leaders of today.

Let us finish what the youth of ’76 started: building a South Africa where every young person has access to quality education, opportunity, and the chance to thrive.

Happy Youth Day. Honour the past. Build the future.

RE: DASO Sandwich Drive

Dear Madibaz,

Today we hosted a successful Sandwich Drive at the Indoor Sports Centre, where students preparing to write their examinations received sandwiches and coffee.

While a sandwich and a cup of coffee may seem small to some, for many students it was a reminder that they are not alone in this journey. Examination season is often accompanied by stress, anxiety, exhaustion, and financial challenges. Through this initiative, DASO wanted every student to know that their hard work is seen, their sacrifices are appreciated, and their dreams matter.

To every student burning the midnight oil, attending study sessions and pushing through difficult circumstances, keep going. Your dedication today is building the future you deserve tomorrow. Do not allow temporary challenges to make you doubt your potential.

We will continue to serve, support, and stand alongside students because we believe that every student deserves an opportunity to succeed.
