We are so proud of the three of you and thanks so much to open water coach, Deshaan Pillay, on all the hard work he has put into getting these three swimmers to where they are in Open Water.

I love stories of perseverance and triumph through a tough situation and 15 year old Jemmah Roman showed tonight what a tough girl she is.

Jemmah had a phenomenal SANJ and then unfortunately tore her calf playing another sport and could not compete in many events at Seniors.

At first, I didn’t think Algeria was a good idea as we only trained 6 proper sessions before she left, but she showed that if you put your mind to the task at hand you can be triumphant.

Yes it wasn’t a PB, but she executed the race exactly as planned. Always remember in the 200m Butterly, it’s often not the person who is leading the first 100m who wins the race.

I love coaching swimmers to do the tough races as I think that’s where the Mathematics comes in and Jem split 33 , 37 , 38 , 37 and did just what she needed to do.

I am so proud of you, Jem. 200m Butterly ain’t for the faint hearted and you delivered one heck of a performance. Wish I could have been there with you. You rock!!

So so proud of you, Olivia!

As a coach you play such a vital role in helping the swimmers reach their full potential. Encouragement, guidance, technical advice and psychological support are only a few of the vital components a coach needs to incorporate. We play a role in the journey to assist but when the race day comes, it all boils down to, THE ATHLETE!!

The truth of the matter is that when an athlete gets older, they need to start taking responsibility for their own journey and what they willing to put in and overcome, will lead to greater success.

The proverb , ‘You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make them drink.’ is such an important one.

When it comes down to top elite swimming it really boils down to how badly you want it as an athlete, what you are willing to put in as well as sacrifice and the fight inside of you to bring out the best possible you on that day.

There can’t be doubts, there can’t be fears, you have to have the belief in yourself to smash it out the park.

Your coach, parents and peers can believe in you and help boost your confidence. We can lead and guide you and get you to a certain place, but YOU are the answer to what happens in that moment.

I am so proud of all the athletes at Infinity and what they have achieved this season. I will continue to help and guide my athletes to be the best they can be, but in this next season I encourage them, just like the horse who will drink as much water when they reach the place to drink, to fully immerse themselves in ‘the water’ and not hold back one bit. You all have got this. Let’s go!!
