DIFFERENT FORMAT, SAME SUCCESS | This month’s Zebra Classic delivered a challenge with a difference in that it took the form of a combined betterball alliance (split pairs).

The changed format clearly had no impact on the turnout, with a full complement of 48 players across 12 teams rocking up and rolling on June 10.

Well done to the Bushwackers team of Dave Orchard, Harley Boven, Martin Gierz and Dewald Prinsloo for taking the win.

The Zeb is earning more stripes by the month and it’s all thanks to our phenomenal participants.

RESULTS

Best Combined Alliance | 1 Bushwackers (90 points), 2 Par then Bar (85), 3 Ou Manne (82)

Best Nett | Shona Dryden (62)

2 Club | Wayne Broedelet, Noel van Onselen, Gavin Venter, Graham Bell, Piet Wilkinson and Tienie Maritz

Nearest to the pin for two on 5th/14th: | Okkie Steyn

IT'S A MUG! | This news falls into the better late than never category and it goes like this.

WOMEN | 1 Shona Dryden (65), 2 Cathy Evans (69), 3 Fiona Richards (72)

ANOTHER CLASSIC | Participation and performance par excellence were the orders of the day at our most recent Zebra Classic. 🦓

We are proud to say that we were only one player short of a full house! Packed fields have really become the norm at our marquee monthly outing and we thank each and everyone. Naturally, the 4-ball alliances rose to the occasion on and off the course. 🏌️

But, before we get to the tale of the tape, a reminder that the next Zebra Classic takes place on June 10. It will be a split-team format where a pair from each team will play another in a better-ball showdown. The scores of the two pairs in each 4-ball are tallied to decide the winners.

RESULTS (MAY 20)

Best nett: Nico de Witt and Wayne Dewing (60 nett)
Best alliance: Groovy Chicks (86 points)
Nearest to pin: Tony Vorster (8th/17th)
2 Club: Tony Vorster, Brett Giddy, Dewald Prinsloo and Reyneir Bekker

ON SONG | While Sir Elton John pleads for the sun not to go down on him, it is safe to say that members of the Sardinia Bay Golf Club yearn for exactly the opposite every Friday afternoon.

You see, this lot can post some decent numbers themselves and while the encore is more related to fun than fandom, the Sundowners shootout at Sards is equally special.

The best "performances" on the day came from the following peeps. Well done!

Winners: Reynier Bekker, Nick Evans and Jannie Bosch (42 points).
Runners-up: Terence Doyle, Dean Miller, Kieron Paoli
Closest to pin on 2nd: Dean Miller
Closest to pin from deck: John Price
Lucky draw (lesson with Dewald Prinsloo): Tony Vorster
Bucket-of-balls (awarded for quietening the crowd during prize-giving): Reynier Bekker

CASH THE RAIN CHECK | “Rain stopped play”.

Can there be any more painful words in golf?

Let’s just say last week’s torrential downpours, while extremely welcome for the Bay’s catchment areas, were a little too zealous for the Order of Merit contenders wanting to be out on the course.

There is, after all, the small matter of catching the current top five of Cathy Evans, Stephen Daly, John Price, Lorette Dewing and Noel van Onselen.

On the bright side, the chasers have the perfect opportunity to make some serious inroads when they line up for this month’s Zebra Classic on Wednesday.

Naas Botha famously said the Currie Cup isn't won in May - and neither is our OM.

PUMPING IRONS | Some people choose to hunker down when the roads close for the annual Ironman Africa championship but you won’t find any of them at Sards.

True to form, a whopping 36 participants turned out for not one but two residents-only competitions – an 18-hole “IronMan” IPS for members and a 9-hole Medal open to anyone.

As others tested their mettle on sea and land, our champions’ irons were burning red-hot from tee to green.

A big shoutout to everyone for bringing the "gees" like only you can.

RESULTS

Men’s IronMan champion – Okkie Steyn
Ladies IronMan champion – Kim Broedelet
9-hole champion – Erin Brinkman
Longest drive – Yanesh Naidoo (9/18th)
Closest to pin – Kathy van Onselen (2nd)

PUSHING PAUSE | Dear Sards faithful, please note that everyone's favourite little golf track will be closed to the public on Sunday, April 19.

Road closures will be in effect for the safety of a few thousand men and women who will be displaying a very different kind of iron when they swim, run and bike their way around the Bay.

We will be cheering them on as they pass by our front gate and are sure you will be doing the same on a public road near you.

Sards Golf Club wishes all competitors blue skies and tailwinds!
