Players : Giving feedback is mostly about honesty and openness. It’s not about fault finding. Another integral part of it is simply about how you feel as a player and no feedback session should ever leave you feeling dejected and or demotivated.

Challenge : Next time coach asks you for feedback, please start with the positives. Start with the stuff you’ve done right! Start with how proud you are of yourself and your efforts.

Coach : You giving feedback should NOT only be about what the player(s) have done wrong or haven’t done right. It shouldn’t even be MOSTLY about the negatives.

Challenge : Next time you give feedback, start with a High five and the words I’m proud you then proceed to mention something positive. You can then follow up with a negative and give a possible solution or plan of actions.

Remember; we coach human beings, who have feelings and emotions. The aim is to develop athletes who honest and confident at the same time. Honest enough to acknowledge that they need to improve somewhere and confident enough to express themselves, confident enough to back their own game. It starts with what we say and how we day it.

We are often afraid of change, especially when we feel there’s nothing wrong or there’s needed to change. There’s even a quote we often use in sport, “Why fix it if it’s not broken?”. It’s a phrase that insinuates that change only happens to fix and not to improve or simply to make something better.

I’m a firm believer that change is not just about fixing or mending, sometimes it’s about prevention and sometimes, well it’s simply about growth.

Change is scary because it requires to move from the known to the unknown. Takes bravery and courage to fully execute.

“Change feels risky until staying the same feels worse.” - Unknown
