Thank you Mike Ryan for our weekly report.

🌸 A BUSY & BOWLS-TASTIC WEEK AT THE CLUB! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ―

The week kicked off on Tuesday afternoon with a fantastic turnout for our Tabs Competition. Members certainly embraced the arrival of spring, dusting off their brightest and most colourful Spring shirts πŸŒΊπŸ‘• β€” making for a wonderfully vibrant afternoon on the greens!

πŸ† Standout Team:
Judy Hunter, MC Coetzee, Gill Armstrong & Mike Pfotenhauer
🎁 Their winning efforts were generously rewarded with My SPAR Rosehill β€” well deserved!

🌞 Wednesday Morning brought fresh spring weather for our Novice & Golden Oldies session. A special mention goes to Derek Braans, who is playing some exceptional bowls and is already matching many of our top Tabs players! πŸ‘πŸŽ― We can't wait to see his tab in our next competition.

πŸ¦… Wednesday Afternoon – Kowie Eagles Junior Bowls!
Our youngsters were back on the greens for their second coaching session, and they certainly took flight! πŸ¦…πŸŽ³ The youngsters loved every minute, and it was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and enjoyment.

🎢 Wednesday Evening – Stenden University Port Alfred Takes Over! πŸ’ƒπŸ•Ί

As part of our community outreach, the club was taken over β€” lock, stock and sound system! β€” by students from Stenden South Africa, a private higher education institution offering specialised full-time degrees here in Port Alfred.

They brought along a playlist that only today's generation could pull off! πŸ˜‚πŸŽΆ The dance floor was packed, the energy was electric, and it was fantastic to see the club buzzing well into the night.

🍻 A massive thank you to Craig Gibson and Mark Aspeling, who did a sterling job behind the bar, keeping a very thirsty young crowd hydrated! πŸ‘πŸ‘

It was also great to see that, after their night out, the students were all safely bussed back to their student campus with organised transport. πŸšŒπŸ‘

🌧️ Thursday Tabs was a rather damp affair! Continuous drizzle made conditions challenging, but our hardy bowlers battled through 14 ends before calling it a day and retreating to the clubhouse for a well-earned tipple. 🍻

πŸ‰ Saturday – Tabs, Braai & BOKKE! πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦πŸ”₯

With the third and vital Rugby Test against the mighty All Blacks looming β€” and several members away competing in the Eastern Areas finals in Kenton β€” only a handful of members put in their tabs.

πŸ† Champion Team:
Andries Bezuidenhout, Mike Ryan, Mark Aspeling & Theresa Pretorius πŸŽ―πŸ‘

Those who stayed on at the club to watch the big game got the full South African treatment! πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦πŸ”₯ A collection was made, the fire was lit, and rib cutlets, boerewors and mushrooms were braaied, with fresh buns provided for everyone. πŸ˜‹πŸ”₯

And, of course…

πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦ THE BOKKE WIN! πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦πŸ‰πŸŽ‰

Needless to say, the Bok victory was the cherry on top of a fantastic day filled with bowls, braai, friendship, music, laughter and plenty of good times!

Another wonderful week at the club β€” and we wouldn't have it any other way! πŸ’šπŸŽ―πŸ»πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦

TIMM AND VROOM CUP - FINAL MATCH:

Kowie Bowls Club hosted the fourth and final round of the Timm Cup on Thursday afternoon against their arch rivals, Port Alfred.
Four teams from each club contested the final round in a competitive finish to the season. Kowie BC held their nerve in close encounters to win two of their four matches, securing the overall trophy for 2026.
Well done to all players who took part on a well-earned win.

Vroom Cup:
It was a great finish for the Kowie ladies on the B Green in the 4th and final round of the Vroom Cup. One game finished in a tense 18-all draw, but Helise Hattingh, Margaret Stegmann and Christa von Gericke won comfortably on the adjoining rink. Result: Kowie win the Cup by 10 points with a big shot difference. Congratulations Ladies - the club is very proud of you!

1990's & 2000's NOSTALGIA TRIVIA

The Club came alive on Friday evening as we took a trip down memory lane with our 1990's & 2000's Nostalgia Trivia evening. At the helm was the brilliant Nicky Bezuidenhout, who handled quizmaster duties with true professionalism, wit and flair, making it an evening to remember. The winning team for the evening was Allison Horne, Rowena Penberthy, Bev C**k, and Hilton C**k
The fun was perfectly punctuated by a superb β€œBuild a Burger” supper, prepared specially for the occasion by Andries from MyPond Hotel - absolutely delicious and much appreciated by all. A wonderful evening of great company, great laughs, and great nostalgia.
Huge thanks to Wharf Str Fruit and Veg and Butchery for sponsoring the prizes. Also MC, Ronel, Andy and Andries for their input during the evening.

Weekly report by our scribe Mike Ryan

Playing in lovely warm late winter weather, the Tuesday afternoon tabs competetition was well supported.

With the B green nicely dried out after a full week of sunshine, it was pleasing to see that lines and weight were the way to go.
The team who stood out on the day was Pieter Stegmann, Helise Hattingh, Rodney Gradwell and Theo Kemp.

Wednesday morning's Novices and Golden Oldies was well attended. It was great seeing the notable improvement of Andre Wessels’ game in general. Keep going Andre.

There was plenty of action across both B an C greens on Thursday afternoon. While B Green hosted the final rounds of the Timm and Vroom Cup, C Green was set up for the scheduled tabs competition. Top honours went to the in-form trio of Peter May, Margie Thomas and Louise Fleming, who were the standout team of the day.

Bowls was the winner for Saturday's tabs in, with a result of 1 or 2 points in all the matches played. An afternoon thoroughly enjoyed by all.

After attending the final EP squad training and trials in PE, we are very proud to announce that Jackie and Megan Kriel made the EP squad once again. Congratulations to our two club stalwarts.

Kowie Eagles - Junior Bowls Project:

A number of members who will be utilised as coaches, joined Club President Dave Thomas on Wednesday morning to learn more about the introduction of our new Junior Bowls project. The initiative aims to introduce the game to young, school-going enthusiasts, and is a significant undertaking for the club, one that will go a long way to securing the future of bowls at our club.

The official launch of the Junior Bowls Project on Thursday evening which was led by Dave Thomas, was a great success. It was well attended by sponsors and members of the press.

The initiative will get underway with the first coaching session on 26th August, to be run by eight lady volunteers, many of whom are former school teachers.

The new Junior Section will be aptly known as "The Kowie Eagles".
Sincere thanks to our main sponsor, Edge Financial Group, and also to Cosihome, for making this exciting project possible.
