FRIDAY BOUNCE AND BRAAI

Friday afternoon saw a good turnout where members handed in their tabs for "bounce" games. A bring-and-braai followed play and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. Big thank you to Andries and MC for all their help during the evening.

NOVICE INTERVENTION
Thursday afternoon also saw Kenton host the Novice Intervention competition. Kenton won all 3 of their games and Port Alfred won 2 and lost one. Our chaps were pipped at the post in two tightly contested games winning only one of the 3 games played. Well done Kenton!

Play shifted to the C green this week with A and B still closed for maintenance.

Tuesday afternoon’s tabs competition drew plenty of keen bowlers for an afternoon of competetive bowling, complete with dassies sounding the alarm as eagles hunted nearby. A good reminder to look up now and then and appreciate where we get to play the game we all love.

After some excellent teamwork and consistent bowling, top honours for the day went to Sheila Spring and her team of Rob Walker and Archie Maree, who emerged as worthy champions.

Warm winter weather greeted the Novice and Golden Oldies group on Wednesday morning. It was particularly pleasing to welcome Richard Glennie back to the greens after a lengthy absence. Richard also brought along his brother Walter, visiting from Perth, who joined in and enjoyed the morning’s activities.

Thursdays tabs competition was well attended and tightly contested. The team that gelled the best on the day was Peter May, Margaret Stegmann and Andy Hough.

With the threat of further rains from our weather forecaster for Saturday, only a handful of members braved the weather and handed in their tabs. Top spot for the day went to the formidable pair of Avice Steenkamp and Andries Bezuidenhout, who outplayed their opponents to finish in top spot.

Tuesdays afternoon delivered perfect bowling weather, and our members turned out in force for the tabs competition. The greens were lively, the banter even livelier, and by the end of the day, it was clear it was "Stegmann Day" at the club. Both Pieter and Margaret Stegmann's teams ended the day on the winners’ podium, pulling off a husband-and-wife double.
Pieter led his trio of Dougie Spring and Theo Kemp to claim the day’s champion honours and the bragging rights of the day. Margaret wasn’t to be outdone either, and was an intergral part of her teams win, making sure the Stegmann's name did a clean sweep for the day.

And then the rains came, and came, and came again. For us bowlaholics, it left everyone staring out the window, wondering if there really is life after bowls.
With the downpours showing no signs of letting up, all our competitions had to be cancelled for the week.
Fortunately, our friendly neighbours at Port Alfred BC's whose greens had dried out sufficiently, hosted our members for Saturday afternoons tabs which turned out to be the highlight of the week.
Huge thanks to Radue Optometrists who sponsored the afternoons prizes.

Best of luck to our players who competed in the Mini District trials at Port Alfred BC on Sunday: Jackie Kriel, Vonnie Hill, Ronel Hough, Judy Alexander, Wendy Heny, Joanne Brown, Christa von Gericke, Megan Kriel, and Shiela Spring. We’re proud of your efforts and representation on the greens.
The final district team will be announced later on this week.

Lastly, congratulations to Jonty Alexander, Justin Louw, Peter May, Andries Bezuidenhout and Sean Wiblin for being chosen to represent the Mens Mini Districts team during the weekend of 24th to 27th Sepember in Somerset East. We are all very proud of you.

Ladies EP Bowls Masters Tournament:
In a display of consummate skill and sporting excellence, our very own Jackie Kriel claimed the Silver Medallion at the Ladies E.P. Masters Tournament, hosted this past weekend in Gqeberha. This outstanding result secures her place among the Eastern Cape’s bowling elite. We express our deepest pride and congratulations to Jackie on this distinguished achievement.

Trivia Night - What a debut!

Friday evening saw the club buzzing, as we launched our very first Trivia Night which blew the roof off! It was a runaway success from the first question to the final tallying of the score sheets.

The evening wrapped up with prize-giving and a sizzling "boerie-roll" that hit the spot. Taking the crown as our reigning brainiacs for the evening was the team from "50 Shades of Whey" with Andre, James, Kirsty and Mia. In second place was the family team - "Quizlamic State" of Jonty, Scott, Trevor and Diana Langley. Third spot went to Natalie, Jason and Louise of Team N.J.L. Best dressed lady prize was won by Natalie Okonski with Ant Bowdler taking the best dressed man.

To our members who missed it - you missed a belter of an evening. A massive shoutout to Andries, MC, and especially to Nicky, our razor-sharp quizmaster who kept the room lively and the competition fierce.

Weekly update by our scribe Mike Ryan
Tuesday afternoon set the tone for the week with a good turnout for our tabs competition. Making her comeback after a six week break, Ruth Walker was in fine form with a sparkling display of bowls. Teaming up with Peter May and Mark Aspeling, the trio took top honours for the day.

Playing in cool, overcast weather, the Novice/Golden Oldies group enjoyed a relaxed, pressure-free morning session. The standout player this week was Allison Horne, who truly played out of her socks.

Thursday afternoon saw another good turnout for the tabs competition, with strong participation across the green. The team of Peter May, Joanne Brown, and Martin Slattery delivered an outstanding performance, outplaying their opposition to be named team of the day.

Saturday was yet another glorious day for bowls. The team that won the days bragging rights was Lester Scriven, Jack Wiid, Rowena Penberthy and Sheena Warren

Fortunately the rains stayed away enough for us to have a full week of bowls to report on.
Tuesdays tabs game was played in cool overcast weather where the team that gelled the best on the day was Allan Sheridan, Peter May, and Piet Boshoff.

On Wednesday morning, it was smiles all round as Derek Braams rejoined the Novice/Golden Oldies group after his time away with family and friends. Turns out the break did him good. He rolled onto the green and straight back into form, stringing together a morning of top-drawer bowls. Verdict from the group - the comeback kid takes player-of-the-day honors.

It was great to see such a healthy turnout for Thursday’s tabs. The “B Green" which was rested to dry out over the past week, played beautifully for the afternoon’s matches. Special mention goes to the all-lady team of Wendy Heny, Margaret Stegmann and Wendy Counihan, whose combined skill and teamwork emerged as the day’s standout performers. A great result and a great advert for women’s bowls at the club.

It’s truly heartening to see the club buzzing every Friday at 14:30, as members gather for the organised yet informal “bounce” games. More than just a roll-up, the afternoon doubles as a sharpener, a chance for players to fine-tune their lines and weight ahead of the weekend’s competitions. The greens are alive with camaraderie, concentration, and that quiet confidence that only comes from match practice. The turnout speaks volumes about the commitment in our club.

Playing on the well prepared "C Green”, Saturday afternoon saw Allan Sheridan, Judy Hunter and Mark Aspeling reign supreme in the tabs clash, delivering a clinical finish to claim the bragging rights for the day, sending a clear message - the green belonged to them.

Saturday and Sunday saw our club hosting 16 top players who gathered at our club for the mini district trial games to finalise the team to represent the EA's mini districts fours. Good luck to the 12 who get chosen.

Lastly, a big thanks to Melanie de Witt, a Hogsback resident and club member, for organising the trip for eight of our members who made the journey to Hogsback for a weekend of bowls and plenty of fun, supporting the Hogsback Classic - the club’s annual bowling highlight. No silverware to boast of, but everyone who went said it was an absolute blast.
