UL have played 5 matches so far in the 2026 Varsity Football competition.
They lost to DUT, Wits, UJ & UFS and drew against UWC.
With just 2 matches left to play, it seems they will finish outside the Top 4 on the log and will not progress to the semifinal this year.
Later this year, around December, every university in Section A (which is like the NFD of USSAs) will play to qualify for 2027 Varsity Football.
Universities in Section B (ABC Motsepe League level at USSAs) will fight to gain promotion to Section A.
UL was in Section B in 2024 and gained promotion to Section A.
They then played in Section A in 2025 and were part of the 8 teams that qualified to play 2026 Varsity Football.
There are 18 teams in Section A in total. For example, NWU played Section A USSAs in December last year but failed to qualify for 2026 Varsity Football.
The last time UL played Varsity Football was in 2018.
The rebuilding process hasn’t been easy but it looks promising.
