Instead of making the necessary tactical adjustments, South Africa persisted with the same approach, ultimately leading to repeated problems throughout the match. It is one of those games where, after careful analysis, the conclusion is simple: Bafana Bafana should have performed better.

I genuinely cannot believe how many people on social media are blaming Ronwen Williams for the first goal Bafana Bafana conceded against Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Firstly, Williams has played these types of passes countless times at Mamelodi Sundowns FC to evade opposition pressure. If you watch the sequence carefully, you will notice that:

✔️ Yaya Sithole dropped his hand to signal for the ball to be played into his feet.

✔️ A poor first touch then resulted in him being dispossessed, with Mexico immediately capitalising. It was a genuine mistake, one that no player is immune to making.

✔️ He had two passing options available, one on his left and another on his right, which could have been used to bypass the press.

So how does a teammate’s mistake become Ronwen Williams’ fault?

Why is Williams being made to carry the burden of another player’s error? Had Sithole controlled the ball cleanly and successfully played through the pressure, this conversation would not even be taking place. Going into halftime at 0-0 could have completely changed the dynamics of the match.

What surprised me more was that, even after the mistake, Sithole continued to be used in the first phase of build-up. It was evident that he was uncomfortable operating in high-pressure and high-density areas of the pitch.

From a tactical perspective, the bigger question should not be about Williams’ pass, but rather why Sithole was repeatedly tasked with receiving under intense pressure in zones that do not suit his profile and strengths.
